Johannes Baptist Katschthaler
Johannes Baptist Cardinal Katschthaler (born May 29, 1832 in Hippach im Zillertal , † February 27, 1914 in Salzburg ) was Archbishop of Salzburg from 1900 until his death .
Life
Johannes Baptist Katschthaler first studied theology in Vienna and then theology in Salzburg, where he received his doctorate theologiae . After his ordination on July 31, 1855 in Salzburg, he was initially vicar in St. Johann im Pongau . In 1864 he became a dogmatic professor and from 1875 taught the subjects of dogma history and apologetics in Innsbruck . Since 1876 he was an honorary member of the Catholic student union AV Austria Innsbruck .
Katschthaler took over the representation of the Salzburg archbishop in the Tyrolean state parliament. In 1880 Katschthaler became cathedral capitular in Salzburg and in 1882 director of the priestly house. In 1891 he was ordained titular bishop of Cybistra and in 1892 cathedral provost . His election as archbishop took place in 1900.
On June 22, 1903, Pope Leo XIII took him . as a cardinal priest with the titular church of San Tommaso in Parione in the College of Cardinals . Katschthaler took part in the conclave in 1903, at which Pius X was elected Pope.
Johannes Baptist Katschthaler was instrumental in promoting the idea of re-establishing a (Catholic) university in Salzburg, he supported church reforms and was a well-known promoter of church music and sacred art. His pastoral letter on the dignity of the priesthood attracted much attention in church circles.
Archbishop Katschthaler was buried in the crypt of Salzburg Cathedral .
