Gregor Schenk von Osterwitz († May 9, 1403 ) was Archbishop of Salzburg from 1396 to 1403 and at the same time administrator of the incorporated Reich Prelature Berchtesgaden .

On April 10, 1396, the new archbishop was elected just five days after the death of the predecessor Pilgrim II von Puchheim . Gregor comes from the Carinthian gentry of the Osterwitz taverns . From 1367 he was canon , from 1387 then cathedral provost in Salzburg .

Gregor Schenk as Archbishop

Although Gregor promised the dissatisfied estates that they would meet their demands before his election, he did not keep this promise after the election and ruled just as authoritarian as his predecessor. His government work was overshadowed by the schism of the popes and the long struggle for the German royal crown. The Archbishop of Salzburg cautiously supported the deposition of the German King Wenzel and the installation of Ruprecht of the Palatinate , especially after he had confirmed all rights and privileges to him, including the incorporation of the monastery of Berchtesgaden . Also Boniface IX. confirmed the incorporation in 1402.

Archbishop Gregor could point to a very successful economic policy. He continued to equip cities and markets with privileges that his predecessors had begun. With the proceeds of the good income, the Archbishop of the Diocese of Passau acquired the dominion of Mattsee including Straßwalchen .

Under this archbishop the prince-archbishopric reached its greatest expansion. His authoritarian stance, in which he often defied long-acquired rights of the estates , and the numerous obligations his predecessor Pilgrim had entered into, led to increasing dissatisfaction within the nobility, despite the externally very successful government work.

Gregor Schenk von Osterwitz was buried in the Salzburg Cathedral in front of the baptismal font.
