Sigmund II of Hollenegg
Sigmund II von Hollenegg also Sigismund II von Holneck (* unknown; † July 3, 1495 in Mühldorf ) was Archbishop of Salzburg from December 15, 1494 until his death . He was considered extremely educated and was particularly respected by his contemporaries.
Life
After the inglorious reign of Friedrich V. von Schaunberg , the Salzburg canons were determined to elect an educated and in every respect capable man as archbishop. On 16 October 1494 they chose the hospital master Sigmund formed, which in the cathedral by Bishop on February 8, 1495 Georg Altdorfer the episcopal ordination received. The new archbishop from the family of the Salzburg ministerials von Hollenegg (today West Styria, south of Deutschlandsberg ) had obtained the doctoral degree decretorum at the University of Vienna and presumably taught for a short time at the University of Vienna.
Carried by the firm will to radical reforms, Sigmund began his government work. Resistance came primarily from the rural nobility, but also from the peasantry, who increasingly revolted against the high taxes. The many land damage caused by the mines were also criticized. At the invitation of the king and later emperor Maximilian I, he set out on a journey to Worms on April 28, 1495 . On the way home from Worms, Sigmund suddenly fell seriously ill and died on July 3, 1495 in Mühldorf after only eight months of reign.
