Josef Marketz (born July 30, 1955 in Sittersdorf (district Kristendorf / Kršna vas) or St. Philippen ob Sonnegg / Št. Lipš) is an Austrian Roman Catholic clergyman and bishop of Gurk-Klagenfurt .

Life

After graduating from high school in Tanzenberg and studying philosophy and theology in Salzburg and Ljubljana , Josef Marketz was a deacon in Ecuador for a year, then on June 29, 1982 he received the sacrament of ordination for the diocese of Gurk .

From 1985 to 1988 he worked in youth ministry for the bilingual area ; from 1986 to 1989 he was provisional parish priest in St. Jakob im Rosental . After a period of study, he was in 1992 at the University of Vienna to Dr. theol. PhD . He then headed the Slovenian department of the Carinthian Pastoral Office until 2007. At the same time he was pastor in Radsberg from 1994 . In 2004 he was made a papal honorary chaplain. In 2006/2007 he was provisional for the parishes of Ferlach, Unterloibl and Glainach. After studying in Jerusalem and Rome, he was again head of the Slovenian department of the Carinthian pastoral office from autumn 2008, and in 2009 he became director of the pastoral office of the diocese and episcopal vicar for pastoral care, mission and evangelization. In 2014 he was appointed director of the Carinthian Caritas Association and episcopal vicar for Caritas and for social services.

On December 3, 2019, Pope Francis appointed him 66th Bishop of Gurk-Klagenfurt. The episcopal ordination by Franz Lackner , Metropolitan of the Salzburg Church Province, took place on February 2, 2020 in Klagenfurt Cathedral. Co-consecrators were the military bishop of Austria , Werner Freistetter , who had administered the diocese of Gurk-Klagenfurt as apostolic administrator during the vacancy , and the archbishop of the neighboring archbishopric of Maribor , Alojzij Cvikl SJ .

Positions (selection)

In February 2020, Marketz advocated the voluntary nature of celibacy for Roman Catholic priests. In August 2020, he spoke out in favor of the ordination of female deacons in the Roman Catholic Church and the inclusion of women in church leadership.
