history

The current municipality of St. Jakob was probably settled as early as the Neolithic Age, but this assumption is not backed up by archaeological finds. The grave field of Frög in the neighboring community of Rosegg indicates at least a settlement during the Hallstatt Bronze Age . A cult stone of the Persian god of light Mithras , popular among Roman soldiers, has been preserved in the church in the Schlatten district from late Roman times .

In the 6th century Slavs settled in what is now the Rose Valley; many of the Slovene field and place names are likely to have their origin at that time. Colonization and Christianization by the Bavarians began in the 9th century. In the 11th century, the parish church of St. Jakob von Graf was Ozzi I. (one coming from Bavaria nobles, the order in 1024 and the Ossiach monastery founded) as a private church built. The area of today's St. Jakob was severely affected by the Turkish wars between 1472 and 1483.

During the conflict between Austria and Napoleonic France , St. Jakob belonged to the Illyrian provinces from 1809 to 1813 . The French-Austrian border ran along the Kleiner Sucha trench. In 1888 St. Jakob was spun off from the large community of Rosegg, which was formed in 1849, and established as a separate community. The construction of the Karawankenbahn with the Karawanken tunnel between 1901 and 1906 led to an economic boom.

After the end of the First World War and the dissolution of Austria-Hungary , conflicts arose over the strategically important Karawanken tunnel in the course of the Carinthian defensive battle . The places Rosenbach, St. Jakob and Rosegg were occupied by troops of the SHS state . After heavy fighting, the Karawanken tunnel came back under the control of Carinthian troops in May 1919. The referendum on October 10, 1920 brought a majority in St. Jakob in favor of joining the Kingdom of Yugoslavia (54%). However, since 59% of the electorate in the entire voting zone A were in favor of remaining with Austria, the municipality remained with Carinthia.

During the Second World War , numerous Slovene-speaking community citizens were forcibly evacuated and deported to concentration camps. The strategically important railway stations Maria Elend and Rosenbach were bombed several times by Allied air raids.

St. Jakob was raised to a market town in 1981.

population

According to the 2001 census, the market town of St. Jakob im Rosental has 4,465 inhabitants, 94.2% of whom are Austrian, 1.2% Bosnian and 1.2% German citizens.

16.4% of the population belong to the Slovene-speaking ethnic group . The proportion of the population speaking Slovene decreased considerably in the course of the 20th century - in the 1910 census, 90% of the St. Jakober people gave Slovene as a colloquial language.

89.8% of the community population profess to the Roman Catholic Church , 2.3% to the Evangelical Church and 1.6% to Islam . 4.7% have no religious beliefs.

Culture and sights

  • The pilgrimage church Maria Elend is a Gothic hall church with considerable baroque modifications and a massive Romanesque church tower. It was built by the Ossiach Benedictines after 1267. After it was destroyed during two Turkish invasions in 1478 and 1483, a new building was built and inaugurated in 1486. The church received its present form in the years 1682 to 1690.
  • The so-called Kapellenberg is located on the slope south of Maria Elend. There are two chapels next to each other halfway up :
    • The smaller one is older and was inaugurated on October 24, 1731 by the Ossiach abbot Virgil. It has a wooden tower. The Latin inscription “Maria in Exilio” says that it is dedicated to Mary in misery, in exile.
    • The larger chapel, consecrated in 1751, was built by a wealthy woman from Graz : She made the vow to build a larger chapel over the existing one in the event of her convalescence for the Blessed Mother Mary . Instead of replacing the old chapel, the builder simply placed the large one next to the first, which led to the current arrangement of the two chapels.
    • Not far from the two chapels to the east there is a spring with a wooden superstructure from 1767. The water flows from the side of a stone statue of Jesus and is curative according to old popular belief . Many pilgrims come to this spring, called Vodica (water), and wet their eyes three times while praying.
  • Parish Church of St. Jacob with modern wall frescoes by Valentin Oman

coat of arms

The coat of arms of Sankt Jakob im Rosental shows "in the obliquely left divided shield a Jacob pilgrim shell above in red, below a red rose in silver" and thus expresses the community name "talking": The shell is the attribute and symbol of the parish patron James the Elder , the red, five-petalled rose symbolizes the rose valley to which the community belongs and which it bears in its name - however, its name is not derived from the rose, but from three castles of the Lords of Ras : from the Rasburg on the Gratschenitzen, built in the high Middle Ages (also: Gratschützen) west of Rosenbach, a second castle in Schlatten ( Ras Castle ) and the third in today's Rosegg ( Rosegg castle ruins ).

The coat of arms and flag were awarded to the community on May 16, 1980, the flag is red and white with an incorporated coat of arms.

Personalities

  • Miklova Zala (Rosalie Mikel), from the Mikelhof in Schlatten, was abducted by the Turks in 1478. Their story was processed into an epic by the teacher and saga collector Jakob Sket (1852-1912), which in turn served as the basis for plays (e.g. by Jaka Špicar ). A glass window was dedicated to her in the new church in neighboring St. Egyden .
  • Gustav Januš (* 1939), writer, painter and teacher
  • Anton Janežič (1828–1869), writer and teacher
  • Josepha Kraigher Porges , b. Lederer (1857–1937), writer, was born in today's district of Maria Elend and was raised there by the "blacksmiths" parents after she ran away from her middle-class parental home; her autobiography gives an intimate glimpse into village life from a child's point of view.
