Gustav Alois Januš (born September 19, 1939 in Zell-Pfarre , Carinthia ) is an Austrian painter , poet and translator who writes exclusively in Slovene .

Gustav Januš was born on September 19, 1939 in Zell-Pfarre / Sele-Fara, Carinthia and attended the grammar school Schloss Tanzenberg / Grad Plešivec near Sankt Veit an der Glan / Št. Vid ob Glini. For a year he studied Catholic theology at the theological diocesan college in Klagenfurt and, after leaving the seminary, was trained as a primary school teacher in a one-year high school graduate course. After teaching at several bilingual schools, he was a secondary school teacher in Sankt Jakob im Rosental / Šentjakob v Rožu from 1971 to 1998 , where he taught Slovene, art education, physics and chemistry. Gustav Januš is married and has one daughter. He lives in Frießnitz / Breznica in the municipality of St. Jakob im Rosental / Šentjakob v Rožu.

Literary work

Januš works as a translator from German into Slovenian. As a poet and painter he is self-taught . He writes in free verse and depicts the reality of Carinthia, partly in a satirical way . By 1981, Januš published a large part of his texts in the magazine mladje , for which he was a permanent employee from 1961, initially under the pseudonym »Fran Korojan«, and from 1972 to 1981 he was editor of the lyric section. He has published several books of poetry, many of which have been translated into German by his friend Peter Handke . Through the prominent translation by Handke and the subsequent books by the Residenz-Verlag, Januš quickly became known and recognized beyond Austria. Handke called Januš the only living genius .

In 2018 Januš was awarded the Humbert Fink Literature Prize. The prize of the Carinthian state capital Klagenfurt am Wörthersee, endowed with 12,000 euros, is awarded every two years. It goes to authors in the German and Slovenian languages ​​who come from Carinthia and who have made a name for themselves through their literary commitment in the Carinthian and national literary landscape.

His second artistic self is the painter Gustav Januš, who has exhibited in numerous group and over 70 solo exhibitions at home and abroad since 1969. His artistic language is as modern as his poetry. Januš uses an artful imagery that underlines its character by repeatedly choosing certain shapes. His painting is often an abstraction from natural forms. A frequently recurring motif are spikes, which can be assigned to a crown, but also to a mountain peak or even the sun. Other elements from which he tries to develop his pictures in a balance between vitality and calm are limestone mountains, hills, valleys, stones; their structures, traces, signs, colors. His pictures and poems give an answer to one another, although both can and must stand for themselves. In pictures and poems, so Januš, he looks for "conditions or places that weren't there before."
