The Conquest class is a series of five post-Panamax cruise ships that were built at the Italian shipyard Fincantieri for the shipping company Carnival Cruise Lines . Between 2002 and 2005, the shipping company invested about two billion dollars in the development and construction of the ships, which are derived from the design of the Triumph class , but extended by around 18 m (59.1 feet) and added another restaurant were.
With regard to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 , the naming of the ships was based on patriotic themes (“conquest”, “honor”, “bravery”, “independence”, “freedom”).
Machine system and drive
The ships of the Conquest class are equipped with diesel-electric machinery. Initially, four 16-cylinder and two 12-cylinder diesel engines from the Sulzer ZA40S series built under license by Wärtsilä-NSD were used. They develop a cylinder output of 720 kW (approx. 980 hp ) and drive generators from ABB , which supply the ship with electrical energy.
The two fixed propellers are driven by shaft systems with three-phase synchronous motors .
With the construction of the Carnival Liberty , which was laid down in March 2004, six V-12-cylinder engines of the newly developed 46 series from the Finnish manufacturer Wärtsilä were used. The engines are equipped with common rail injection systems and two exhaust gas turbochargers . At a speed of 514 rpm, the cylinder output is 1,050 kW (approx. 1,430 hp ). Despite reduced fuel consumption and lower pollutant emissions, the performance of the machine system increased by approx. 20% compared to the previous system. This also created the prerequisites for future modernization on the technical side. The motors each drive a three-phase generator with an electrical output of 14,000 kVA . These generator sets supply the entire ship with electrical energy. The modernization required extensive redesign of the electrical systems.
In the conventionally designed drive system with shaft system , fixed propeller and rudder, the propeller motors previously used by ABB were replaced by new developments from the French company Alstom . The new engines run at up to 149 rpm and develop an output of 20 MW each .
