The Carnival Glory is a Post-Panamax - cruise ship of the shipping company Carnival Cruise Line . The cruise ship, measured at 110,239 GT, is the second ship in the Conquest class and sails under the Panamanian flag .

history

Construction and commissioning

The Carnival Glory was the 20th ship to be built by the shipping company at the Italian shipyard Fincantieri in Monfalcone . She was laid down on July 1, 1999 and was delivered to the client on June 27, 2003. After the 12-day transfer to Port Canaveral , the christening followed on July 14, 2003 by the astrophysicist and former astronaut Dr. Sally Ride . It took her several attempts to hit the hull with the bottle.

commitment

After a five-day cruise immediately after the naming ceremony, the Carnival Glory was stationed in Port Canaveral on July 19, 2003 as the largest cruise ship at that time . In the meantime, the ship is mainly used in the Caribbean from different base ports (including Miami , Charleston ) . Due to its width, however, it is not possible to pass through the Panama Canal . In addition, the Carnival Glory also runs trips on the American east coast from the base port in New York .

Machine system and drive

The diesel-electric machinery of the Carnival Glory is almost identical to that of the type ship Carnival Conquest . The four 16-cylinder and two 12-cylinder Wärtsilä NSD diesel engines are licensed builds from the Sulzer ZA40S series with a cylinder output of 720 kW (approx. 980 hp ). They drive generators from ABB , which supply the ship with electrical energy. The two fixed propellers are driven by shaft systems with three-phase synchronous motors .

During a regular dry dock stay at the Grand Bahama Shipyard in Freeport ( Bahamas ) at the end of January 2010 , the 5-blade fixed propellers and the rudder blades were replaced by the "Promas Lite" drive system from Rolls-Royce . This integrated propeller-rudder system consists of 4-blade fixed propellers with individually screwed blades (diameter: 5.8 m) and optimized rudders. According to the manufacturer, the new drive system should achieve an efficiency increase of 11-13%.

Cabins and on-board facilities

The Carnival Glory was originally equipped with 1,469 cabins, around 60% of which are outside. Around 60% of the outside cabins have a balcony.

The ship was designed by Joseph Farcus with the theme "colors". Accordingly, the names of the public areas refer to colors and tints. The name of the ship refers to the nickname of the American national flag ("Old Glory").

The center of the Carnival Glory is the “Colors Lobby” on Deck 3 (“Lobby” deck) with the “Old Glory” atrium, which extends up to Deck 10 (“Panorama” deck) and is closed off by a glass dome . In the atrium are four panoramic elevators installed. In the rear of the ship there is another smaller atrium (“Spectrum”), which extends over three decks and is connected to the public areas amidships and in the bow via the “Caleidoscope Boulevard” on deck 5.

The Carnival Glory is equipped with 22 themed bars and lounges . The main theater ( "Amber Palace", dt. Amber Palace ) can accommodate about 1,400 visitors and was modeled after the Amber Room decorated. The two main restaurants ("Golden Restaurant" and "Platinum Restaurant") are based on the gold and silver temples of the Japanese city of Kyoto . The main kitchen area is located between the two restaurants. The "Ebony Cabaret" in the rear was designed based on African art. There are four pools on board the Carnival Glory . One of them (amidships, "Turquoise Pool") has an approx. 65 m long water slide, another (aft, "Azure Lido Pool") can be covered with a movable roof structure ("Magrodome") and can also be used in bad weather conditions. The wellness area with an area of approx. 1,350 m² is located on deck 11, on the “sky” deck a “serenity” area has been set up which is reserved for adults.

At the end of January 2010, the ship's on-board equipment was comprehensively overhauled and modernized. The so-called “Seaside Theater” was set up on the “Panorama” deck, which consists of an LED screen with an area of approx. 25 m² and a 70,000 watt sound system. In addition, a further 18 cabins on the “spa” deck were equipped with balconies. The Carnival Glory now has 1,487 balcony cabins.

Special occurrences

On December 20, 2019, there was a collision with another cruise ship in the port of Cozumel (Mexico). The mooring Carnival Glory rammed the bow of the Carnival Legend, which was already moored at the pier . One person was injured. After a temporary repair, both ships were able to continue their cruises.
