The Carnival Magic (dt. Magic ) is a cruise ship in the Dream class , which by the shipping company Carnival Cruise Line is operated. The 23rd newbuilding project of the shipping company is the sister ship of Carnival Dream and was put into service on May 1, 2011 as the 100th ship of the Carnival Corporation & plc group .
history
Construction and commissioning
On December 18, 2006, Carnival Cruise Line made use of the option to order another Dream Class cruise ship. The keel of Carnival Magic (hull number 6167) was laid on January 12, 2010 at the Fincantieri shipyard in Monfalcone . The first construction section with a mass of approx. 630 tons was 18 m long and 21 m wide. The launch with the "coin ceremony", in which a silver dollar was welded to the top deck, took place on August 27, 2010.
On September 27, 2010, a barge pulled by two tugs with the six diesel engines that were intended for the Carnival Magic sank off Trieste in Italy. The tugs had cut the cables when the tug got caught in a storm. First one of the machines crashed into the sea, shortly afterwards the barge also sank to a depth of about 20 meters. The damage was stated at around 18 million euros and is borne by the engine manufacturer Wärtsilä , on whose behalf the towing association was traveling between the Fincantieri shipyards in Monfalcone and Marghera in northern Italy. The schedule for the delivery of the Carnival Magic should still be adhered to.
At the beginning of October 2010 the building dock was flooded and the ship was moved to a floating dock for completion. After the test drives were completed in spring 2011, the Carnival Magic was delivered to the owner on April 27, 2011. After the christening ceremony on May 1, 2011 (godmother: Lindsey Wilkerson), the ship left Venice on its maiden voyage.
commitment
After commissioning, the Carnival Magic initially operated cruises in the Mediterranean . The ship was stationed in Barcelona . Since November 2011 she has been cruising the western Caribbean from Galveston ( Texas ) all year round . The Mediterranean cruises took over the identical Carnival Breeze in 2012 , in 2013 these trips will be taken over by Carnival Sunshine , which was previously underway as Carnival Destiny .
Incident 2014
After casting off in Roatán ( Honduras ) on October 15, 2014, the ship was supposed to call at Belize on October 16, 2014 . However, the authorities refused to authorize the call because a hospital employee from the US was on board , who was believed to have come into contact with Ebola samples. On October 17, 2014, the ship was supposed to call at the port of Cozumel Island in Mexico . The Mexican authorities did not approve the call either. The ship was now going straight to Galveston, Texas .
Machine system and drive
The machine system of the Carnival Magic is almost identical to the system of the Carnival Dream . Six three-phase generators driven by twelve-cylinder diesel engines from the Wärtsilä 46 series supply the ship with electrical energy. The propulsion system is conventionally designed with electric propeller motors, shaft systems , 6-blade fixed propellers and active rudders.
Cabins and on-board facilities
For the Carnival Magic , many facilities have been adopted for the cabin layout and deck equipment that have already proven themselves on the Carnival Dream . These include the water park ("WaterWorks"), the shopping and entertainment area "Ocean Plaza", the outdoor promenade with the four whirlpools protruding above the deck and the extensive spa and wellness area . Compared to the sister ship Carnival Dream , the number of passenger cabins will be increased to 1,845. 746 cabins are available for the crew. The ship will thus offer space for over 6,000 people. The Carnival Magic will be the first ship in the fleet to be equipped with a high ropes course (“SkyCourse”) and a pub (“The Red Frog”), in which a beer specially brewed for this purpose (“ThirstyFrog Red”) will be served. The establishment of an Italian trattoria refers to the Italian officers on board the ships.
