The Carnival Dream (dt. Dream ) is a cruise ship of the shipping company Carnival Cruise Line . It belongs to the post-Panamax category and was measured at almost 130,000 GT . At the time of commissioning, the Dream- class type ship was the largest cruise ship in the history of the shipping company. The Carnival Dream is registered in Panama .
history
Construction and commissioning
The Carnival Dream was laid down at the beginning of 2008 with hull number 6151 at the Fincantieri shipyard in Monfalcone near Trieste , Italy . The largest cruise ship that the shipyard had built up to this point was a further development of the Conquest class, the external appearance of which was largely retained, except for the design of the stern. As part of the flooding of the building dock on October 24, 2008, the traditional mint ceremony also took place, during which a silver dollar was welded in a special container on one of the upper decks. During test drives in early July 2009, the Carnival Dream reached speeds of up to 24.5 knots. The ship was handed over to the shipping company on September 21, 2009.
commitment
After the handover, the maiden cruise of the Carnival Dream led from Rome ( Civitavecchia ) through the Mediterranean for 16 days . On October 27th, the crossing of the Atlantic began in the direction of New York , where the ship arrived on November 12th, 2009. The christening took place on November 12, 2009 at the cruise terminal in New York. The godmother was the actress Marcia Gay Harden . The ship left New York on November 15, 2009 for its first cruise to the Bahamas and Florida . Since December 12th, 2009, the ship has been operating seven-day Caribbean cruises all year round from the base port of Port Canaveral.
Incidents
- On December 9, 2009, the planned stop on San Juan had to be canceled because the ship could not dock at the pier due to its size. Apparently, a large sculpture erected there years earlier had hampered the mooring maneuver.
- On March 13, 2013, 4,300 passengers had to cancel their trip because the failure of the power generator made a longer stay in the port of Philipsburg on the Dutch Caribbean island of Sint Maarten necessary.
Machine system and drive
The Carnival Dream is equipped with a diesel-electric machine system. The six Wärtsilä V12-cylinder diesel engines of the 46 series run at a speed of 514 rpm and are coupled with generators that supply the ship with electrical energy . Each generator generates an output of 12.3 MW at a voltage of 11 kV. The two propeller motors manufactured by Converteam are built into the fuselage and develop an output of 22 MW each at speeds of up to 135 rpm, which is transmitted via shafts to the 6-blade fixed propeller with a diameter of 5.8 m. Each propeller has a mass of approximately 26.9 tons. The two Becker rudders of type TLFKSR each have an area of 26 m². They can be moved independently of one another and allow a high degree of maneuverability, so that only two transverse thruster control systems are required in the stern of the ship . They are supplemented by three identical systems in the bow.
Cabins and on-board facilities
The Carnival Dream has 1823 cabins of various categories, of which 1144 are outside cabins with their own balcony. Some of the balcony cabins are located relatively close to the waterline on the main deck. The patio is partially closed behind the side wall . The family suites are equipped with two separate bathrooms. 65 cabins and suites on the “Panorama” and “Spa” deck offer direct access to the wellness area.
The naval architect Joseph Farcus , who has already designed other ships for the shipping company, designed the Carnival Dream according to the motto “Dream Cruise”. The atrium extends over 11 decks and is equipped with four panoramic elevators , among other things . The entertainment options on board are of great importance. The main theater "Encore" offers space for 1,400 spectators on three levels. In the “Seaside Theater” on the open “Lido” deck, laser shows are presented in the evenings . The "Burgundy Lounge" is used all day for cabaret and comedy events. A central element of the ship is the "Ocean Plaza" on the promenade deck, which brings together a large part of the shopping and entertainment options. The outside promenade ("The Lanai") leads over a distance of over 800 meters around the superstructures. There are four hot tubs here that protrude above the deck.
In addition to swimming pools and whirlpools, there is also the “WaterWorks” adventure area with a 65 meter long water slide on the upper deck . The “Cloud 9 Spa” wellness area covers an area of over 22,000 square meters on two decks. The adjacent "Serenity" quiet zone is reserved for adults only. There are special areas and entertainment options for children and teenagers.
The two main restaurants are in the stern (“Scarlet”) and amidships (“Crimson”) on the “Lobby” and “Atlantic” deck. They can accommodate over 1800 guests. The kitchen area is located between the restaurants on the “lobby” deck. A buffet restaurant ("The Gathering") with over 1300 seats is located on the "Lido" deck. In addition, the ship has several bars , lounges , a disco and a large casino .
Trivia
- The Carnival Dream was the largest cruise ship built in Italy to date .
- Development and construction took over three years and 5.5 million man hours. Around 5000 employees were constantly involved in the project.
- In order to avoid additional costs due to exchange rate fluctuations, the shipping company and shipyard agreed to carry out all financial transactions in US dollars and not in euros , as is customary at the Italian shipyard .
