The Carnival Ecstasy (dt. Ecstasy ) is a fantasy class cruise ship of the shipping company Carnival Cruise Line , which has been in operation since 1991. It offers holidaymakers, among other things, three pools, whirlpools, various restaurants, discos, a casino and duty-free shopping.

history

Construction and commissioning

The Carnival Ecstasy was built at the Finnish shipyard Kvaerner Masa Yards in Helsinki with hull number 480 as the second ship in the Fantasy class. The building dock was flooded on October 21, 1989 and on April 18, 1991 the ship could be delivered to the owner. The godmother of Ecstasy was Kathie Lee Gifford .

commitment

The Carnival Ecstasy has been used for short and weekly cruises in the Caribbean since it was commissioned. The ship has been flying the Panamanian flag since 2000. After the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the ship served as living quarters for refugees and rescue workers for six months.

From September 19, 2009 to October 17, 2009, Carnival Ecstasy was extensively modernized as part of the “Evolution of Fun” program. Among other things, a mini golf course was installed, the children's areas and the cabins were newly equipped and some shops and restaurants were restructured. In 2009 a water park for children, childcare and the "Serenity" deck (a child-free area) were built. In addition, 98 cabins were equipped with a balcony.

Carnival Ecstasy is currently operating five or six day cruises in the western Caribbean from Galveston , Texas . From September 22, 2011, New Orleans is to become the ship's new base port.

Incidents

On the afternoon of July 20, 1998, the Ecstasy was en route to Key West , Florida, with 2,565 passengers and 916 crew members when a fire broke out in the laundry room shortly after 5:00 p.m. Through the air conditioning, the fire spread to the anchor deck, where anchor ropes ignited and caused intense heat and smoke. When the Ecstasy called at an anchorage north of Miami, the drive and steering failed, making it unable to maneuver. The captain then requested other coastguard ships, who came with six tugs to fight the fire and tow the ship. At 9:09 p.m. the fire was extinguished by fire fighters on board. 60 people were slightly injured in the fire, most of whom were smoke inhaled. The ecstasy had to be repaired for $ 17 million. In the subsequent investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board , unauthorized welding work by crew members in the laundry room was cited as the cause of the fire. Lint in the fan shafts ignited and the lack of sprinkler systems on the anchor deck made the fire so big. These errors were blamed on the operator. The passengers were reimbursed the full price for the inconvenience and the offer to take part in another cruise of the shipping company free of charge.

On July 1, 2007, 18-year-old David Ritcheson committed suicide by jumping off the deck of Carnival Ecstasy . A year earlier he had been the victim of right-wing extremist violence in the United States.

On April 21, 2010 (around 12.55 p.m. local time), the ship had to maneuver near the Yucatán peninsula in the Gulf of Mexico to avoid an object in the water. Therefore, the fell Carnival Ecstasy at 12 ° heeling , 60 passengers and a crew member were injured. It later emerged that the object was a drifting buoy that had been washed over by water and had not been detected by radar. The ship docked safely in the home port of Galveston on April 22, 2010.

On December 27, 2015 (around 6:15 a.m. local time), an electrician was killed in an accident at work in an elevator shaft. Two passengers became aware of blood running down the elevator door. The circumstances of the death are still unclear.
