The Carnival Elation (Eng. Enthusiasm ) is a cruise ship of the Carnival Cruise Line , which was put into service in March 1998 as Elation . When the shipping company unified the names of the ships in 2007, it was renamed Carnival Elation . The ship is assigned to the Fantasy class , but differs fundamentally from the type ship Carnival Fantasy in its drive system.

history

Construction and commissioning

The Carnival Elation was laid down in 1997 as the seventh and penultimate cruise ship of the Fantasy class with hull number 491 at the Finnish shipyard Kvaerner Masa Yards AB in Helsinki . In mid-March 1998 she was handed over to the shipping company. The ship was christened by Shari Arison , the daughter of the shipping company founder Ted Arison .

commitment

On March 20, 1998, the Elation left for her first cruise. She was the shipping company's first ship to be based on the US west coast and set sail from Los Angeles on cruises along the Mexican coast. After the Carnival Elation was stationed in San Diego , it is scheduled to call at destinations in the Caribbean from the home port of Mobile (Alabama) from May 2010 . The Carnival Elation was extensively modernized in 2009 as part of the “Evolution of Fun” program .

Incidents

  • At the end of October 2002 a cruise had to be canceled due to problems with the propulsion system. The ship was briefly put in a dry dock.
  • During a Caribbean cruise in June 2005, the ship was unable to maneuver at sea for about an hour after an engine failure.

Machine system and drive

power supply

The Carnival Elation is equipped with a diesel-electric machine system that supplies the entire ship with electrical energy . In contrast to the previously built Fantasy- class ships, six identical 12-cylinder diesel engines of the type Wärtsilä 12V38 are installed in the two spatially separated engine rooms. They drive synchronous generators that each feed an electrical output of 11,000 kVA into the high-voltage on- board network (3-phase alternating current , 6.6 kV, 60 Hz).

drive

The Carnival Elation was the first cruise ship in the world to be equipped with propeller gondolas instead of a conventional drive with shaft systems, propellers and rudders . Previously, this system was used almost exclusively in special ships such as harbor tugs and similar watercraft.

The drive for the Carnival Elation was developed by ABB Marine and the Kvaerner Masa Yards AB shipyard. The system consists of two propeller pods of the type ABB "Azipod" built into the stern and rotatable through 360 ° . There is a 3-phase synchronous motor in each nacelle, which transmits an output of 14 MW (approx. 19,040 HP) directly to a 4-blade fixed propeller (pull propeller) pointing forward in the direction of travel.

In addition to particularly quiet driving behavior and a low level of vibration on board, this type of drive also ensured greater efficiency and significantly improved maneuverability. The turning circle at full speed could be reduced by approx. 30% compared to the other ships of the Fantasy class.

Cabins and on-board facilities

The Carnival Elation was designed by the naval architect Joseph Farcus under the motto “composers and compositions”. The floor plans of the decks largely correspond to the other ships of the Fantasy class. With regular occupancy, the ship offers space for 2,052 passengers in 1,026 cabins of various categories. 54 of these are suites and 564 cabins have a sea view. In contrast to the more modern ships, most of the accommodations on the Carnival Elation are housed in the large-volume hull. Restaurants and entertainment options are located in the comparatively flat structures. There are only 26 balcony cabins and eight inside cabins on the “Verandah” deck.

The entrance area of the Carnival Elation with the six-story atrium is located above the accommodation areas on the "Empress" deck. Among other things, it is equipped with two panoramic elevators and is closed off by a glass dome at the height of the sun deck. The main restaurants are located amidships and in the stern area of the "Atlantic" deck. In between is the kitchen area . The main theater ("The Mikado") in the bow area takes up Japanese style elements and offers space for more than 1,200 spectators on two levels. In the back of the promenade deck is the “Cole Porter Club” with another stage. In addition, the ship is equipped with various bars , lounges , a library and a casino .

The wellness area on the “Sports” deck covers an area of approx. 11,000 square meters and offers a fitness studio , saunas and massage rooms . As part of the modernization, a “Serenity” area was set up on the Carnival Elation , which is reserved exclusively for adults.
