The Carnival Legend (German legend ) was built as the third ship of the Spirit class for Carnival Corporation & plc with hull number 501 at the Kvaerner Masa Yards AB shipyard in Helsinki . As a ship's theme of the interior designer chose Joseph Farcus the Greek mythology . In terms of technology and deck layout, the Carnival Legend largely corresponds to the other ships in the Spirit class.
The flooding of the building docks took place on 12 December 2001 to coincide with the transfer of the sister ship Carnival Pride . On August 14, 2002 the completed Carnival Legend could be delivered to the shipping company Carnival Cruise Line . The actress Dame Judi Dench performed the christening a week later in the English port city of Harwich .
After commissioning, the Carnival Legend initially sailed from various US ports. Including Philadelphia and Baltimore , which were included in the shipping company 's program for the first time in 2004 . The Carnival Legend was the first ship that was in service for Carnival Cruise Line in European waters. In addition to 12-day cruises to Northern Europe , Atlantic crossings were also offered. This was followed by short trips to the American east coast and cruises between New York and destinations in Canada . The Carnival Legend is now heading for destinations in the Western Caribbean from Tampa ( Florida ) . The Carnival Legend left the Caribbean between spring and autumn 2013 . Special occurrences
During the christening ceremony on August 21, 2002, godmother, Lady Judi Dench, needed three attempts to smash the champagne bottle on the ship's hull. When the bottle burst with the help of Captain Claudio Cupisci, Dench was splashed with the contents. She took the incident with humor.
On July 13, 2005, the Carnival Legend was en route from Tortola to New York City. At about 3:10 p.m. the ship suddenly turned hard to starboard and reached a 14 degree lean angle. Some passengers were slightly injured during this maneuver. The cause was a computer breakdown. No compensation was granted.
On the morning of August 3, 2005, there was heavy smoke development in the lower decks in the bow of the ship. The passengers were asked to go to the upper deck. According to the cruise director, there had been a problem in the engine room .
During the cruise, a 35-year-old passenger was pronounced dead after jumping overboard from the balcony of his cabin on the night of May 27, 2006 in a family dispute. The ship remained in the sea area 450 miles northeast of Florida for eleven hours and didn't reach New York until about 8 p.m. the next day. The body was never found.
On September 30, 2009, the ship was pressed against the flank of the Enchantment of the Seas of the Royal Caribbean Cruise Line by strong winds while casting off in Cozumel ( Mexico ) . Both ships were slightly damaged, but were able to continue their voyage after approval by the authorities.
On February 16, 2018, at the beginning of a cruise off Australia, there was a mass brawl between groups of passengers. 23 passengers had to leave the ship accompanied by Australian police. The cruise was canceled.
On December 20, 2019, the cruise ship Carnival Glory rammed the bow of the Carnival Legend, which was already moored at the pier, in the port of Cozumel (Mexico) while mooring . One person was injured. Both ships were able to continue their cruises.
