The Carnival Pride (dt .: pride ) is one of four Panamax -Kreuzfahrtschiffen the Spirit class , which by the shipping company Carnival Cruise Line are used. She is the 17th new building of the shipping company and was measured with 85,920 GT . The first classification of the ship was made by the Italian company RINA . The Carnival Pride is registered in the shipping register of Panama .

history

Construction, transfer and commissioning

On January 1, 1999, the owner company Carnival Corporation & plc ordered its second Spirit class cruise ship from the Finnish shipyard Kvaerner Masa Yards AB in Helsinki . In winter 2000 the ship was laid down as Carnival Pride with hull number 500. At the end of March 2001, the building dock was flooded and the shell was transferred to the shipyard's equipment quay . The test drives on the Baltic Sea were successfully completed in October 2001. On December 12, 2001 the Carnival Pride was delivered to the operator Carnival Cruise Line. At the same time, the building dock of another cruise ship of the Spirit class, the Carnival Legend, was flooded . After the transfer to the home port of Port Canaveral , the Carnival Pride completed her first cruise in the Western Caribbean between December 30, 2001 and January 5, 2002. Claudio Cupisci was the first captain of the ship. The ship was christened on January 7, 2002 by the US astronaut Dr. Tamara Jernigan in Fort Lauderdale .

commitment

After the Carnival Pride was initially stationed in Fort Lauderdale (Port Canaveral), it was relocated to Long Beach ( California ) to head for destinations on the US and Mexican west coast. In spring 2009 she was briefly traveling from Miami to the Caribbean. It has been based in Baltimore ( Maryland ) since the end of April 2009 and departs from the South Locust Point Cruise Terminal for cruises to the Caribbean.

Machine system, drive and operating technology

power supply

The Carnival Pride is equipped with a diesel-electric machine system that supplies the entire ship with electrical energy and process heat . To ensure a high level of operational safety, the total of six diesel generator sets are divided into two independent groups. The motors are low-pollution 9-cylinder 4-stroke turbocharged diesel - line engines of the type Wärtsilä 9L46D. They are equipped with common rail injection and produce hardly any visible exhaust gases under all operating conditions. Each motor is coupled to a brushless synchronous generator , which feeds an electrical output of 14,405 kVA into the high-voltage on- board network (3-phase alternating current , 11 kV, 60 Hz). Two ACS6000 drive converters supply the propeller motors (3-phase alternating current, 1,570 volts, variable frequency ), three further converters provide the energy for the rest of the on-board network (3-phase alternating current, 440 volts, 60 Hz). The ship's electrical system was designed and built by ABB .

drive

The drive of the Carnival Pride consists of two propeller pods of the type ABB "Azipod" built into the stern and rotatable through 360 ° . She is one of the first cruise ships to be equipped with this technology. This type of drive ensures particularly smooth driving behavior and a low level of vibration on board. In each nacelle there is an air-cooled 3-phase synchronous motor with double winding, which has an output of 17.6 MW (approx. 23,940 HP) directly on a 4-blade fixed propeller with a diameter of 5.60 m, which is directed forward in the direction of travel transmits. With a propeller speed of a maximum of 133 rpm, the Carnival Pride reaches a top speed of 24 knots. The service speed is between 18 and 22 knots. For maneuvering in harbors and at low speeds, three cross-thrust steering systems from the Norwegian manufacturer Brunvoll are installed in the bow . They work with controllable pitch propellers at constant speed and each produce 1,883 kW (approx. 2,560 hp). For roll damping the ship is equipped with a pair of Rolls-Royce - fin stabilizers equipped.

Industrial engineering

The waste heat from the machine system is used as process heat, among other things, for fresh water treatment on board. The six heat exchangers in the exhaust system of the diesel engines generate approx. 15 t of water vapor per hour. They are supported by two oil-fired systems that can also provide approx. 26 t of water vapor per hour. The fresh water is produced by a seawater desalination system , which consists of two evaporators and a reverse osmosis system.

The waste disposal systems are installed on the lower deck and consist of two shredders for combustible and non-combustible, each dry, waste. Unsorted garbage is shredded in two high-performance shredders and then pressed. The two incineration plants develop a thermal output of 1,400 kW. Used glass is sorted by color and processed by waste disposal companies on land.

The entire technology of the ship, as well as navigation and control, is managed and monitored by a system installed on the bridge (IBS, Integrated Bridge System).

Furnishing

Cabins and on-board facilities

There are 1,062 cabins on the 12 passenger decks of Carnival Pride , which can accommodate up to 2,680 passengers when fully occupied. More than 70% of the accommodations are outside cabins, almost 80% of which have a balcony. The “Junior”, “Ocean” and “Vista” suites are located on different decks in the stern area. The six “Grand” suites are arranged amidships on the “Empress” deck and have their own whirlpool .

The interior of the Carnival Pride was designed by the naval architect Joseph Farcus under the theme “Icons of Beauty” based on the Italian Renaissance . The center of the ship is the 10-storey “Renaissance” atrium with an 11 meter high reproduction of the painting “Triumph of Galatea” by Raphael . The atrium is closed off by a red glass dome integrated into the contour of the chimney. The upper decks can be reached via three panoramic elevators. A total of 15 elevator systems are installed. In the front part of the ship is the "Taj Mahal" theater with Indian style elements. It extends over two decks, has 1,167 seats and is equipped with the latest stage , lighting and sound technology. Directly below the theater is the “Butterflies Lounge” with a small stage. The two-storey discotheque “Beauties” is located in the stern of the ship. The design of the jazz club “Starry Night” is reminiscent of Vincent van Gogh's painting of the same name . The furnishings of the "Ivory Bar" refer to the Japanese art of ivory carving. The library is dedicated to Alfred Nobel , the founder of the Nobel Prize .

The main restaurant "Normandie" in the stern of the ship offers space for 1,250 guests on two decks. In the design, Joe Farcus was based on the style elements of the famous Normandy passenger ship from the 1930s. In a separate area, the “Captain's Club”, there is space for 86 people for special occasions. On the “Lido” deck is the “Mermaid's Grille” buffet restaurant, the ceiling of which is decorated with sculptures of mermaids . From here you can reach the “David's Supper Club” restaurant via a curved flight of stairs directly below the glass dome of the atrium.

There are three salt water pools and three whirlpools on the “Lido” deck . The pools are named after characters from Greek mythology (" Venus ", " Apollon " and " Poseidon "). The eponymous statues at the pools were created by the Italian artist Katia Tasselli. The rear pool area can be covered with a movable glass roof. There is a small children's pool on the “Sports” deck. The ship's wellness and fitness area (“Nautica Spa”) is equipped with saunas , various exercise machines and another whirlpool and covers almost 1,350 square meters on two decks. A 22 m long water slide connects the "Sports Deck" with the sun deck.

The public areas also include:

  • various lounges
  • a casino
  • a chapel
  • a shopping area with various shops
  • Entertainment and play areas for children and young people

Lifeboats

The Carnival Pride is equipped with six tender boats (length: approx. 11 m) and twelve motor-driven lifeboats (length approx. 9.75 m), each designed for 150 passengers. In addition, the ship has 26 life rafts with a capacity of 35 people each. Overall, the lifeboats offer space for 3,610 passengers.
