The Costa Mediterranea is a cruise ship operated by the Costa Crociere shipping company . The ship was built in 2003 and was the flagship of the Italian shipping company for half a year .
history
The Costa Mediterranea started her maiden voyage on June 16, 2003. She led the then new ship from Genoa in Italy to Málaga , then it went through the Strait of Gibraltar to Casablanca , Cádiz , Lisbon , Gibraltar and back to Genoa.
Areas of application
Since 2010, the ship has been regularly in service in the Mediterranean in summer , while it continues to sail the Caribbean in the winter months . In November 2018 it was announced that the Costa Mediterranea would leave the Costa Crociere fleet in the medium term and will henceforth be used by CSSC Carnival Cruise Shipping Limited , a joint venture between China State Shipbuilding Corporation and Carnival Corporation & plc . The exact time of the transition has not yet been determined.
The ship
With a maximum number of passengers of 2,680 (2,114 without the use of loft beds), the ship has 1,057 cabins, including 40 outside wellness cabins with balcony, four wellness suites, 620 balcony cabins and 54 suites with private balcony. Furnishing
The Costa Mediterranea has a main restaurant (Argentieri), a buffet restaurant (Perla de Lago), a restaurant reserved for wellness cabin customers and a specialty restaurant (Medusa). There are also twelve bars on board. In the outdoor area there are three swimming pools (one can be covered) and three whirlpools. In addition, an indoor whirlpool (wellness area) is freely accessible. Depending on the weather, a water slide can also be used.
style
Built in the style of Italian aristocratic palaces from the 16th and 17th centuries, Venetian influences and works of art can be found throughout the nave. The ship was set up by Joe Farcus, who already equipped the Costa Atlantica . The 25 meter high work of art by the artist Gigi Rigamonti is located in the lobby. The figures, reminiscent of altarpieces from the 18th century, can be viewed from the panoramic elevators.
Other Information
The on-board language on the ship is mainly Italian; important announcements are also translated into German, English and French. The staff is multilingual throughout. Information material and information events are available in German. The on-board currency is euros or US dollars, depending on the area of operation.
Identical ships
The ship belongs to the Spirit class and has five largely identical sister ships. Costa Crociere uses the sister ship Costa Atlantica .
