The Costa Victoria is a cruise ship that entered service in 1996 and was operated by the Italian shipping company Costa Crociere until March 2020 .

history

The Costa Victoria was built from 1994 to 1996 as the first of three ships of this series at Bremer Vulkan , completed by the Lloyd shipyard in Bremerhaven, which belongs to the Vulkan network , and delivered to the Costa Crociere shipping company on July 10, 1996. The ship sailed under the Italian flag with its home port of Genoa . On July 28, 1996, the ship was put into service in Venice .

To pay for the ship, Costa Crociere handed over the cruise ship Eugenio Costa to the Bremer Vulkan shipyard as a partial payment.

The order for the sister ship , which should go under the name Costa Olympia , was withdrawn shortly after the hull was completed. This hull, called Costa Rosta by the Bremen population because of the lack of paint after the volcano bankruptcy , was bought by the shipping company Norwegian Cruise Line and had the ship completed at the Lloyd shipyard. In 1999 it was delivered as Norwegian Sky . Another ship of this class is the Norwegian Sun .

The Costa Victoria was completely renovated in 2004 at the Lloyd shipyard, and it also received external balconies. In October 2013 the ship was renovated again at the Sembawang shipyard in Singapore for 18 million US dollars until November 11, 2013.

In July 2019, the ship served as accommodation for around 1900 athletes during the 30th Summer Universiade in Naples . After the Costa Victoria ended its last cruise in March 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic and then lay in Civitavecchia , it arrived in the port of Piombino on June 23, 2020 . There, the only 24 year old ship is being prepared for its demolition.
