The Costa Smeralda is a cruise ship operated by the Italian shipping company Costa Crociere . The Helios class ship with a measurement of 185,010 GT was completed in 2019.

history

In March 2015 Carnival Corporation & plc ordered four ships from Meyer Werft and Meyer Turku with delivery from 2019 to 2022, including the Costa Smeralda . All four ships were ordered in June 2015. The name Costa Smeralda was announced on September 13, 2017, the same day construction began at the Meyer Turku shipyard with the first steel cut. The cost is approximately $ 950 million. A 140 meter long fuselage section was built at the Neptun shipyard and was transferred to Turku from June 19 to 24, 2018 and docked on June 26, 2018. On July 4, 2018, the ship was laid down. The launch took place on March 15, 2019.

The ship was originally due to be delivered in October 2019 and christened in Savona on November 3, 2019 . In September 2019, delivery was initially postponed to November 2019; the first cruise was scheduled to start on November 30, 2019. In October 2019, delivery was postponed to December 2019. The ship was finally delivered on December 5, 2019. The first cruise began on December 21, 2019 with start in Savona and the destinations Marseille , Barcelona , Palma de Mallorca , Civitavecchia and La Spezia . The christening took place on February 22, 2020 in Savona by Penélope Cruz .

The Costa Smeralda was named after the coast of the same name on Sardinia .

The sister ship Costa Toscana , also destined for Costa Crociere, is due to be delivered in 2021.

Furnishing

The Costa Smeralda has 19 decks, 16 of which are passenger decks, and offers space for around 6,518 guests in 2,612 cabins. This makes it the largest ship operated by the Costa Crociere shipping company . The Costa Smeralda has a total of 19 bars, 11 restaurants and 4 pools.

technology

The Costa Smeralda is the second ship in the Helios class after the AIDAnova . The ships can be operated with liquefied natural gas . For Costa Crociere it is the first ship with this technology.

Special occurrences

During a cruise in the western Mediterranean, the Costa Smeralda entered the port of Civitavecchia on the morning of January 30, 2020 . After a suspicion of the corona virus had been established shortly beforehand in a passenger from China on board , neither passengers nor crew members were allowed to leave the ship. The suspicion was not confirmed, the quarantine was lifted late in the evening. Unscheduled, the ship stayed in port for another day so that the passengers could catch up on excursions to the surrounding area, especially to Rome. The La Spezia call planned for January 31, 2020 has instead been canceled.
