The Celestyal Experience is a cruise ship operated by Celestyal Cruises . It was originally built for Costa Crociere and delivered in 1993.

history

Construction and commissioning

The ship was built as Costa Romantica for Costa Crociere . On December 30, 1985 the contract for the construction of the Costa Romantica was signed. The ship was designed by the architects Pierluigi Cerri and Ivana Porfiri of the Milanese architecture firm Gregotti e Associati. The ship was laid down on December 14th, 1988 with the hull number 5899 at the Fincantieri shipyard in Marghera , a district of Venice . The launch took place on November 28, 1992. Upon acceptance by the RINA classification society , the ship was measured at 53,049 GT and handed over to the owner on September 20, 1993. Two days later the ship was christened by Maria Alessandra Costa Fantoni. At that time, the Costa Romantica and its sister ship Costa Classica were the largest Italian passenger ships. On October 7, 1993, the Costa Romantica was put into service in Genoa . The ship initially sailed under the flag of Italy with its home port in Naples . In 2000 Genoa became the new home port.

A special feature of the Costa Romantica and the Costa Classica was the "Lisbon Deck", a round, fully glazed plateau at a height of around 40 meters above the sea.

Conversion to Costa neoRomantica

From the end of October 2011 to February 2012, the Costa Romantica was fundamentally renovated and two half-decks added in the dry dock of the San Giorgio del Porto shipyard in Genoa in cooperation with the T. Mariotti SpA shipyard for around 90 million euros . 111 new cabins were created and 120 additional cabins were equipped with private balconies. The "Lisbon Deck" has been removed.

Numerous areas of the ship, for example the spa area ("Samsara"), various bars, the theater or the night club were newly created or completely redesigned. The plans for the conversion came from Syntax Design ( Great Britain ) and Tillberg Design ( Sweden ).

As a result of the renovation work, the gross tonnage increased from 53,049 to almost 57,000 GT, the number of cabins rose to 789. As a visible sign of the extensive modernization, the ship was then renamed Costa neoRomantica .

Sale to Celestyal Cruises

As part of the COVID-19 pandemic , the ship was sold to Celestyal Cruises in July 2020 . The ship was handed over in August 2020 and renamed the Celestyal Experience . Since then it has been sailing under the flag of Cyprus with its home port of Limassol .

Incidents

Incident 2015

On March 5, 2015, the ship ran into heavy seas between Sicily and Marseille . The ship lost an anchor .
