Costa Serena in Istanbul , Turkey

The Costa Serena is a cruise ship on the Costa Crociere . It has been used mainly in the Mediterranean since 2007. Her name means siren , a female mythical creature from ancient Greek mythology, in whose style the entire ship is equipped.

As the second ship in the Concordia class , she was identical to the Costa Concordia . The other sister ships Costa Pacifica , Costa Favolosa and Costa Fascinosa and Carnival Splendor followed by 2012 . Together with the Costa Serena , these were the largest cruise ships built in Italy at the time of their commissioning and are a good three and a half meters too wide for a passage through the Panama Canal .

history

Order and construction

On January 4, 2005, before the completion of the Costa Concordia , Costa Crociere reached an agreement with the Fincantieri shipyard to have a second ship built in Sestri Ponente for EUR 475 million based on the same plans. The delivery should take place in spring 2007, so only nine months after the scheduled completion of the Costa Concordia . According to the company, around 450 million euros were ultimately invested in the construction. On May 15, 2007 the ship was handed over to Costa Crociere and then transferred to Marseille for the christening on May 19, 2007 . The celebration was accompanied in the French port city by an opera gala with fireworks and laser show around the most famous sights of the city. The godmother was the French actress Marion Cotillard . At the same time, a parallel event for the introduction of a digitized version of the ship including a cruise terminal took place in the virtual world Second Life .
