The Concordia class is a series of post-panamax cruise ships from the American travel company Carnival Corporation & plc , which was originally developed for the Italian subsidiary Costa Crociere . It goes back to the design of the Destiny class from 1996 and was the largest construction class of the company when the type ship Costa Concordia was commissioned .

From a technical point of view, the Concordia class is based on a modification of the Conquest class, which was modernized from 2004 . Compared to this series, however, the spa and wellness area has been expanded to a complete deck.

The Splendor class has a special position within the Carnival group. It is almost identical to the Concordia class; However, only one ship - the Carnival Splendor  - was built and put into service for the subsidiary Carnival Cruise Lines , which is managed and marketed by the shipping company as an independent class within the fleet. She is more similar to the two newest ships Costa Favolosa and Costa Fascinosa than the previously built Costa Serena and Costa Pacifica .

Machine system and drive

In the diesel-electric machinery of Concordia class six V-12 cylinder engines of the type Wärtsilä 46 for use. Each engine is a good ten meters long, about six meters high and has a mass of almost 170 tons. The engines have four valves per cylinder and are equipped with common rail injection and two turbochargers each . At a speed of 514 rpm, they develop a cylinder output of 1,050  kW (approx. 1,430 hp) and each drive a three-phase generator with an electrical output of 14,000  kVA . These generator sets are mounted on floating foundations and supply the entire ship with electrical energy. With the help of the exhaust gas heat, water vapor is generated in special boilers , which is used, among other things, for drinking water treatment on board. In addition, several auxiliary and emergency power generators are installed. The Costa Pacifica , the Costa Favolosa and the Costa Fascinosa are equipped with a shore power supply system, which takes over the supply of electrical energy during a port stay.

In the conventionally designed drive system, three-phase synchronous machines ( Converteam "Synchro-Drive") act directly on the two fixed propellers via shaft systems . The propeller motors run at speeds of up to 146 rpm and develop an output of 21 MW each.

During normal travel , the ships are maneuvered using conventional balancing rudders , which are supported at low speeds and when three transverse thrusters are placed in the bow and stern.
