Carnival Cruise Line Inc. (abbreviated to CCL ), until 2014 Carnival Cruise Lines Inc. , is a cruise line and the founding company of the British-US group Carnival Corporation & plc . Its headquarters are in Miami ( Florida ).

With its cruise brand of the same name, Carnival Cruise Line transports around 4.5 million passengers per year (as of 2015) and therefore describes itself as the largest cruise operator in the world. In the Group's own "World's Leading Cruise Lines" alliance , it is now on an equal footing with the other cruise brands and subsidiaries of the group that were later acquired.

history

The typical chimney shape of the Carnival ships ( Carnival Valor )

The Carnival Cruise Lines was founded in 1972 by the Israeli - American businessman Theodore "Ted" Arison in Miami as a subsidiary of American International Travel Service (AITS) from Boston founded. As early as 1966, Arison and Knut Kloster built up the shipping company Norwegian Caribbean Line (later: Norwegian Cruise Line ), but left the company after internal differences. Carnival initially started its cruise operations with just one ship. The Mardi Gras , previously in service as Empress of Canada for Canadian Pacific Steamships , ran aground on her maiden voyage for the new shipping company off Miami, but could be made afloat again. The bartender at the time is said to have put together a cocktail called "Mardi Gras on the Rocks" (German: " Mardi Gras with ice cubes" or literal translation: "Mardi Gras on the rocks"), which was long on the shipping company's ships was offered.

Despite this setback, the desired success soon set in. In 1982, the Tropicale, the first newly built cruise ship for several years, was put into service. In 1984 Carnival Cruise Lines started an advertising campaign on US television for US $ 10 million , which was the largest of its kind to date. About three years later started trading with company shares on the Stock Exchange of New York City . During this time the slogan “Most Popular Cruise Line in the World” was coined. When the attempt to take over direct competitor Royal Caribbean Cruise Line failed in 1988, Carnival Cruise Lines acquired Holland-America Line , founded in 1971 , which ran into difficulties in 1991 when it took over Windstar Cruises for US $ 900 million was.

From 1993 the name Carnival Cruise Lines only stood for the founding company. The main organization for this and all acquired cruise lines then traded under the name Carnival Corporation . A new subsidiary was founded in 1994 under the name FiestaMarina Cruises . However, at the end of the year operations were stopped again.

During the 1990s, Carnival put the highest number of cruise ships in any class into service with the eight Fantasy- class ships. The Carnival Destiny , which was the shipping company's first ship to be built at the Italian Fincantieri shipyard, was the first passenger ship of more than 100,000 GT in 1996 . This surpassed the record of the RMS Queen Elizabeth as the largest passenger ship , which had existed since 1940 .

During this time, the shipping company continuously expanded its range of cruises. With the entry into service of the Carnival Elation in 1998, Carnival also offered cruises on the American west coast for the first time. With the first ship of the newly developed Spirit class (type ship Carnival Spirit ), the offer was expanded to include destinations in the waters around Hawaii and Alaska . In 2005, Carnival carried out the first cruises in the Mediterranean with the Carnival Liberty . In 2008 destinations in Northern Europe followed .

In 2005, three of the shipping company's ships were rented by the US government to provide emergency shelters for victims of Hurricane Katrina . The Holiday was in Mobile ( Alabama ), later in Pascagoula ( Mississippi ), the Ecstasy and the Sensation had been moved to New Orleans . The controversial contract ran for six months and cost US $ 236 million.

On September 21, 2009, the shipping company's largest ship at the time, the Carnival Dream , was put into service. Two sister ships followed by 2012.

In May 2016, Carnival Cruise Line put Carnival Vista, the largest ship to date, into service. A sister ship, the Carnival Horizon , was delivered in March 2018. In addition, the Carnival Panorama , which was originally planned for P&O Cruises Australia , was delivered by Fincantieri as the third ship of the Vista class in 2019 . In September 2016, Meyer Turku commissioned two new Helios class ships, subject to financing. The ships are to be measured with 180,000 GT and put into service in 2020 and 2022.

Identification mark

The common distinguishing feature of all Carnival ships since the Tropicale was built is a chimney, the top of which consists of two wings pointing outwards on both sides. The design goes back to the designer Joseph Farcus , who took up a design feature of France .

Incidents

  • On her maiden voyage in 1972, the Mardi Gras ran aground off Miami , but could be made afloat again.
  • On the afternoon of July 20, 1998, the Ecstasy caught fire with 2565 passengers and 916 crew members en route to Key West. Through the air conditioning, the fire spread to areas of the ship where mooring lines were stored, which ignited, causing intense heat and smoke. While the ship was calling at an anchorage north of Miami, the drive and steering failed. The ecstasy was repaired and put back into service.
  • On November 8, 2010, a fire broke out on a diesel generator on board the Carnival Splendor . After about three hours, the fire was extinguished, but the ship was unable to maneuver off the Mexican Pacific coast. Parts of the power supply and the on-board equipment could be kept functional via the emergency power generators . Several ships came to the aid of the damaged vessel , including the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan , which was responsible for supplying the 3,299 passengers and 1,167 crew members with food. After two days in tow, the Carnival Splendor arrived in San Diego on November 12, 2010 . After extensive repair work, she resumed scheduled cruise traffic on February 20, 2011.
  • During a four-day cruise in the Gulf of Mexico on February 10, 2013, a fire broke out in the rear of the two engine rooms of the Carnival Triumph . At that time, the ship was with 3,143 passengers and 1,086 crew members on board about 240 kilometers from Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula . Although the fire could be extinguished by the on-board systems, the main power supply and drives failed. After the sanitary facilities and the power supply could partially be put back into operation, it was decided to bring the ship to the port of Mobile (Alabama) with the help of three tugs . After the tow ropes broke several times due to currents and strong winds, the tug only reached the port of Mobile on the evening of February 14, where the passengers disembarked. The shipping company canceled all voyages of the ship until mid-April 2013. On April 3, the ship broke loose in a storm and drifted towards other ships, damaging a freighter.
  • On December 20, 2019, the Carnival Glory collided with the Carnival Legend lying in the port while maneuvering in the port of Cozumel in Mexico . At the stern of the Carnival Glory , the outer lining of the ship was compressed. Windows were also broken. Six people were injured in the accident. Both ships were still seaworthy despite the collision.

Current ships

Carnival Cruise Line also refers to the 25 cruise ships currently in service as "Fun Ships". Characteristic of all Carnival ships is the striking shape of the chimney, which is modeled on the fluke of a whale and was first realized in 1981 when the Tropicale was rebuilt. In 2007, the shipping company standardized the names of the ships by adding the name "Carnival" to the name of the ship.

In most cases, the ships are stationed in various US ports, but depending on the area of operation, they also leave from foreign ports.

Repeated illegal garbage disposal

In 2002, Carnival Corporation pleaded guilty to forging records of the disposal of oily bilge water from 1996 to 2001. This was accompanied by a fine of $ 18 million. The company was also committed to charitable work and placed under judicial observation for a period of five years.

For repeated illegal dumping of oily waste into the sea and for attempted concealment of the violations, Princess Cruises Ltd was sentenced in 2016 to the highest penalty to date for willful pollution from ships of USD 40 million. The authorities assumed that illegal waste disposal had been a common practice since 2005. Likewise, ships of Princess Cruises Ltd and Carnival Cruise Lines Inc were again placed under judicial observation.

For violations of conditions from the 2016 ruling, Carnival Corporation & plc. and its subsidiary Princess Cruises Ltd were again fined $ 20 million in 2019. The violations were again the illegal disposal of waste, falsification of records and attempts to circumvent judicial surveillance by using cleaning teams to forestall inspections.

Carnival Cruise Lines Inc and Princess Cruises Ltd are both group subsidiaries of Carnival Corporation & plc.
