CP Ships

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

CP Ships ( Canadian Pacific Ships ) was a Canadian shipping company with headquarters in Montreal until 2006 . The company previously operated a successful transpacific and transatlantic liner service. At the end of 2005 the shipping company was taken over by what was then TUI and integrated into Hapag-Lloyd , which at that time was 100% TUI. Today CP Ships itself no longer exists as a company.

history

The Canadian Pacific Railway entered the shipping business in 1884 with the opening of services on the Great Lakes. In 1887 the company set up an overseas service from Vancouver to Asia , initially with chartered tonnage. In 1891 the first newbuildings for the company came into service, with these ships the Empress naming that is so typical of CP was introduced. In 1901, CP bought the Canadian-Pacific Navigation Co. and this company became the brand name for the company's shipping operations. In 1903 the Atlantic Service was purchased by Elder Dempster & Company and Canadian Pacific entered the service ofNorth America to Europe . Since this acquisition, the names start from CP -Schiffen with the letter M . An ocher-colored chimney became a distinguishing mark for the ships of the shipping company.

The transpacific route ran from Vancouver to Yokohama - Shanghai - Hong Kong with occasional stops in Honolulu and Manila . The transatlantic service, opened in 1903, ran from Montreal to Liverpool , and in the winter months Saint John could also be the starting port in North America. In addition, the shipping company operated liner services on the Great Lakes and along the Canadian coast. The Empress naming was used for the ships in the express service and the M naming was used for the liners in the slower services . The latter was also used for the freighters until it was replaced by the prefix Beaver ..... in the mid-1920s .

In 1906, the sister ships Empress of Britain (I) and Empress of Ireland, the first 10,000-tonne vessels for the shipping company. CP was constantly expanding its fleet of passenger and cargo ships. High speeds were not an issue for Canadian Pacific, safety came first. In 1914 the shipping company suffered a major loss, the Empress of Ireland sank on the St. Lawrence River after colliding with a Norwegian freighter. The First World War , which broke out shortly afterwards, meant further losses for the shipping company. In 1915 CP opened a joint Atlantic liner service with Allan Line under the name CP Ocean Service , and in 1917 the partner was bought up. The ship losses caused by the war were more than offset. The shipping company changed its name to Canadian Pacific Steamships Ltd in 1921 .

In the 1920s, a large new build program was launched and some former German ships were taken over. In 1922 CP put their first 20,000-ton truck into service with the Empress of Canada (I) and in 1928 and 1929, respectively, came with the four Duchess - Duchess of Bedford . Duchess of Atholl , Duchess of York , Duchess of Richmond - other ships of this size in service. In 1930, the Empress of Britain (II, 42,348 GRT) was the culmination of this construction program for the transatlantic service, and to this day she is the largest passenger ship ever built for CP. The Second World War meant the loss of most of the fleet, including the flagship of the shipping company, the Empress of Britain .

After the war, the shipping company found a completely new development: the aircraft began to fundamentally change the situation on the North Atlantic. Canadian Pacific put some newbuildings into service in the 1950s - 1956: Empress of Britain (III, 25585 BRT), 1957: Empress of England (25585) and 1961: Empress of Canada (III, 27284) - but it became increasingly unlikely that the passenger liner services could be maintained. At the beginning of the 1970s, all services were suspended and the ships were sold, CP concentrated on container shipping . In 1978 Canadian Pacific withdrew completely from shipping and instead founded the shipping company Canada Maritime Ltd. (Canmar) , until 1995 CP was only represented in the shipping industry by Canmar .

In the mid-1990s, Canadian Pacific bought, in addition to Canada Maritime , several international container shipping companies in quick succession - 1995 CAST , London / 1997 Lykes Lines , Boston / 1997 Contship Containerlines , London / 1998 Australia-New Zealand Direct Lines (ANZDL) , Wellington / 2000 TMM , Veracruz / 2002 Italia SAN , Genoa . CP now owned a fleet of 80 container ships, making it one of the ten largest container shipping companies in the world. The new subsidiaries continued to operate independently and their respective names were retained, but the companies were combined in the holding CP Ships .

A financial scandal in 2003/2004 caused the share price to slide. CP Ships was quickly traded as a potential takeover candidate. At the beginning of 2005, CP announced that all the names of the ships should now begin with the prefix "CP ....", which means that the subsidiary shipping companies should practically be dissolved in order to be able to carry out a possible sale more quickly. TUI's offer was successful at the end of August 2005 and was completed in 2006 for USD 1.7 billion. Another historically great name has thus disappeared from the shipping industry.
