Contship container lines
Contship Containerlines was a container shipping company that operated from 1969 to 2005 in India / Pakistan , Levante , Australia / New Zealand , South America and Asia, mainly to and from Europe .
The company was founded when the container revolution began and grew continuously as this market grew.
history
In 1968, Dr. Angelo Ravano Contship SA in Switzerland . The company's first trip was undertaken by the Sea Maid from Fos to Casablanca in October 1969.
In 1970 an agency was opened in Milan and the terminal operations in La Spezia began. Around 8,000 ISO container units ( TEU ) were handled in the first year . In the following years a European network with subsidiaries in Spain and the Netherlands was established in 1973 and 1974. The relocation of the agency in Milan to Genoa in 1974 was accompanied by the expansion of the range of services to the eastern Mediterranean ports. In 1976 Ellerman City Liners was named Contship Agency in Portugal .
In 1977 two important steps were taken with the formation of a subsidiary in Great Britain and the launch of the first direct container service between Europe and India. This move reflected ambitions to become a meaningful player on key routes. Contship was the first shipping line in the container shipping industry , the container in Bombay (now Mumbai capsized). More experience was gained in 1979 when the Contship Gulf Line was established as a joint service with Ellerman City Liners - a new service that linked Europe with the Middle East .
In the second decade the development of society accelerated. By relocating its headquarters from Switzerland to Felixstowe and then Ipswich , Contship became an integral part of Britain's shipping companies. In the early 1980s, Contship expanded and expanded its interests. The agency for Trans Freight Lines won it in Spain . In the UK, it helped set up Arrowfreight , a freight forwarding company. In the meantime a parent company was founded in Curacao . All of these were steps to improve the company's international presence and reputation.
The Eagle Container Line , which connected Northern Europe and the Mediterranean with Australia , started as a non-conference service in 1982 and gave customers a service that was competitively priced and reliable. 1985 was a busy year with new agency companies in France and Italy, the start of the Euroasia Container Line and the introduction of 1000 TEU ships into the Eagle service. In terms of becoming a global organization, 1986 was particularly significant when the Ocean Star Container Line, a westward round-the-world service, was launched here. The following year the Medipas service, operating between the Mediterranean and India / Pakistan , was launched. The Contship Containerlines brand was founded in 1987 . She gradually took over management control of Contships container shipping services, agency and intermodal activities. At the end of the second decade, the Ocean Star service was expanded to include an Australia- Far East connection and northern European ports. With the acquisition of Costa Containerline , they started a Med-US East / Gulf Coast service.
In the 1990s, new ships were put into service in the Eagle service, the Costa service was revised and the container terminal service began in Salerno . 1991 was the year of major changes for the Indian subcontinent service with the addition of CMB Transport through an agreement to operate a joint service. In 1993, an agreement with P&O resulted in a restructuring of the Eagle service and an improvement in the Ocean Star service by adding larger tonnage . Further tonnage improvements in the Contship Euroasia service were made and the Gulf line was changed to the Contship Levant line in association with four partners in 1994. With the start of container terminal operations in Savona and Gioia Tauro in 1995 and with the restructuring of the Euroasia / Mediterranean-Asia service and the start of a Mediterranean- US Gulf / Mexico service, the range of services was further improved.
In 1996 the Levant service was modified and the Mediterranean-US / Mexico service was improved. The company also took over the Pro Line and thereby brought Contship Containerlines into business between Northern Europe and South America . A new era began in 1997 when Contship Containerlines was taken over by CP Ships , with Contship being one of the few shipping lines that CP took over at a profitable level. The Ocean Star service was given new tonnage and Contship partnered with the CMA-CGM group and Marfret in 1998. 1999 was a year of amalgamating existing activities and building a platform for further growth. Significant cost savings have been made, profitability improved, and new, complementary trades including the US west coast to the Mediterranean have been developed. In the same year Contship launched its website and, as the first container shipping company, painted its web address on the hull of its ships as a mobile advertisement.
In 2001 a new service was started between the People's Republic of China and Europe in partnership with CMA CGM, but this service had to be withdrawn at the beginning of March 2003 due to a lack of profitability, caused by an import / export imbalance, low freight rates and high fixed slot costs.
The Austral-Asia service was expanded at the end of 2002 with the new 4112 TEU reefer container ships Contship Aurora , Contship Australis and Contship Borealis (identical in construction to the Santa R class ) with a large number of reefer container connections. In 2003 the headquarters of Ipswich moved to the new joint headquarters of CP Ships in Gatwick . A new Contship logo was designed in 2004 as a result of a changed branding strategy, but it never achieved the recognition value of the old one. In January 2006, Contship Containerlines was the last brand to be replaced by the CP Ships brand, as CP only wanted to appear with one brand. This was advertised with the project “One brand - One team”. At the end of 2005, CP Ships was bought up by TUI AG and integrated into the Hapag-Lloyd organization in mid-2006 .
Contship Overland
Contship Overland was a division of Contship Containerlines that offered intermodal freight transport . The company had offices in Felixstowe , Glasgow and Milan, and worked with partners in Spain and Greece , providing rail and truck freight solutions where customers needed them. Its main business was intermodal container and swapbody transport between Great Britain and Italy , mostly by rail through the canal tunnel . After about ten years in business, Contship Overland was sold to the Rotterdam- based intermodal company Geest North Sea Line with effect from October 1, 2001.
Contship Italia Group
When Contship Containerlines was acquired by CP Ships in 1997 , the terminal operations in Italy remained an independent company, the majority of which was acquired in 1999 by the German logistics group Eurokai . Today this company operates under the name Contship Italia Group and continues to use the old Contship logo.
