The type of container ship built by the Volkswerft Stralsund as a VW 2500 is considered the most built German container ship type in the 2500 TEU segment.

history

The design was originally developed by the Flender shipyard in Lübeck . During the years that it was part of the Bremer Vulkan group , the design was built as BV 2500 by other shipyards within the group. First of all, from 1996 the Volkswerft built the ship type as the VW 2500 series for various German shipping companies. Based on the basic type, the Volkswerft (later P + S Werften GmbH) developed the VW 2500.C2, VW 2500.3 and later the VW 2500.4.

The MTW shipyard built the type from 1997 with slight modifications as the MTW 2500 .

details

The ships are designed as multi-purpose dry cargo ships with a deckhouse far aft. They are mainly used in container transport. The ships have three holds that are closed with pontoon hatch covers. The container capacity is around 2500 TEU, with homogeneously loaded 14-ton containers it is still 1894 TEU. Early units had 200 reefer connections (refrigerated container sockets) on deck, later units mostly 300 to 320 and individual ships were then even given 420 to 500 reefer connections. The ships were developed for use in areas with poorly developed port infrastructure and are therefore each equipped with three cranes, each with a capacity of 45 tons, arranged amidships. Most of the built-in cranes come from the manufacturer NMF , others were supplied by McGregor, individual units only have a crane preparation.

A characteristic of the 2500 TEU type is the deckhouse , which forms a unit with the integrated chimney shaft. The ships are equipped with freefall lifeboats arranged at the stern .

The ships are powered by a two-stroke diesel engine from the manufacturer Dieselmotorenwerk Rostock with an output of around 17,200 kW. The motor acts directly on a fixed propeller and does not have a shaft generator . The engine type enables a service speed of 20 knots and a top speed of almost 21 knots. There are also three auxiliary diesels and an emergency diesel generator available. The berthing and casting off maneuvers are supported by a bow thruster .
