The shipping company Sunship Schiffahrtkontor KG was founded in 1979 by the Solingen-born captain Manfred Lauterjung. Lauterjung acquired his first ship, the Kümo Sunrise , in the same year . Until 1997, the fleet grew to 18 units and the freight forwarder Manfred Lauterjung Befrachtungs GmbH & Co. KG was founded. In 2008 the shipping company M. Lauterjung GmbH & Co. KG was founded, with which the company was supposed to raise outside capital. In 2011 the crew agency Lauterjung Shipmanagment Colombo was founded and offices were opened in Bilbao, Houston and Dubai. In addition to the founder, his sons Kay and Marc Lauterjung are also involved in the management of the company. Today (as of May 5, 2019) the shipping company operates a fleet of 25 ships which, in addition to a handful of coasters, consists of seven multi-purpose freighters with their own cranes and container ships as well as bulk carriers of various sizes, and since the beginning of 2010 has also included two car transporters .

On the initiative of Manfred Lauterjung, among others, the retired Ems tour ship was taken over by the traditional ship Ems association in 2013 . The association is based in the office building of the Lauterjung shipping company.
