Sumitomo Heavy Industries, Ltd. ( Japanese 住友 重 機械 工業 株式会社 , Sumitomo jūkikai kōgyō kabushiki kaisha ) is a Japanese mechanical engineering company.

It was founded as Kōsakugata ( 工作 方 ) in 1888 to maintain and repair machines for the Besshi copper mine ( 別 子 銅山 , Besshi dōzan ).

In 1934, almost 50 years later, the company achieved enormous growth as Sumitomo Kikai Seisaku KK ( 住友 機械 製作 株式会社 , English Sumitomo Machinery Co., Ltd. ) through the development of machines and systems for the steel and transportation industries. In 1940 it was renamed Sumitomo Kikai Kōgyō KK ( 住友 機械 工業 株式会社 , German "Sumitomo Maschinenbau"), in 1945 in Shikoku Kikai Kōgyō KK ( 四 国 機械 工業 株 式 会 ) and in 1952 back in Sumitomo Kikai Kōgyō KK

In 1969 Sumitomo Kikai Seisaku KK merged with Uraga Senkyo ( 浦 賀 船 渠 , German "Uraga Dock", English Uraga Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. ) to Sumitomo Heavy Industries, Ltd. In the following years the company continued its expansion into new markets. Today, the extensive product spectrum ranges from injection molding machines to laser systems and SMT machines, weapons (e.g. the Sumitomo NTK-62 as the standard machine gun of the JSDF ) to liquid crystal production systems.

In 2011, Sumitomo bought the industrial gear division of Hansen Transmissions , Hansen Industrial Transmissions (HIT).
