Lists on the subject

The Sumitomo NTK-62 is a multi-purpose MG from the production of the Japanese conglomerate Sumitomo Heavy Industries in caliber 7.62 × 51 mm NATO . The NTK-62 was introduced in 1962 as an orderly weapon of the Self-Defense Forces (SDF) and met the requirements there as a light and medium machine gun. Although the M249 rifle, a license production of the FN Minimi by Sumitomo Heavy in caliber 5.56 × 45 mm NATO , has largely replaced the NTK-62 in its role as a light machine gun today, the NTK-62 is still used as a medium machine gun by the Ground forces used by the Self-Defense Forces.

Development of the rifle began in 1954 at Nittoku Metal Industry, a company that merged with Sumitomo in the 1980s. It was developed according to direct requirements of the Japanese Ministry of Defense . The rifle entered service in 1962, hence the name NTK-62, and replaced the Browning M1919 in Japan's defense forces . The ammunition is supplied via decay belts of the American type M13.

According to the three principles of arms exports formulated in the 1960s by the Japanese government, which prescribe an extremely restrictive export policy for armaments, the rifle was never exported from Japan.

variants

The Type 74 variant is a version of the NTK-62 for stationary use in armored vehicles. These include, for example, the type 10 , 74 and 90 battle tanks , the type 89 armored personnel carrier and the type 87 armored personnel carrier . The weight of the Type 74 is around 20.4 kg.
