Ministry of Defense (Japan)
The Japanese Ministry of Defense ( Japanese 防衛 省 , Bōei-shō ) was created on January 9, 2007 from the Defense Agency ( 防衛 庁 , Bōei-chō ). This was created in 1954 to carry out the defensive rearmament of Japan after the Second World War in the form of the self-defense forces.
As part of the cabinet, the Minister of Defense is accountable to Parliament under Article 66 of the Japanese Constitution and is therefore under full civilian control. The minister is responsible for the chiefs of staff of the armed forces, the state secretaries and the general directors of the six internal departments of the ministry (after a restructuring in October 2007).
