Since 1980 he has been a Member of the House of Commons in his father's constituency (formerly 2nd, now 1st constituency of Yamaguchi Prefecture ) and has been re-elected eight times since then. Since 1994, Kōmura belonged to several cabinets as foreign minister, justice minister and as head of the economic planning authority. For the 2017 general election, Kōmura withdrew as a member of the lower house. After Kōmura's withdrawal, the post of deputy party chairman remained vacant; he himself was appointed the "highest adviser" of the "Central Office for the Promotion of a Constitutional Change " ( 憲法 改正 推進 本部 , kenpō kaisei suishin honbu ) of the LDP.
