Yōhei Kono
Yōhei Kōno ( Japanese 河野 洋 平 , Kōno Yōhei ; born January 15, 1937 in Hiratsuka ) is a Japanese politician , former member of the Liberal Democratic Party , Minister and President of the Shūgiin , the Japanese lower house.
Kōno was a co-founder and chairman of the New Liberal Club , an LDP split that existed between 1976 and 1986. In the 1990s he was foreign minister, deputy prime minister and chief cabinet secretary. From 1993 to 1995 he was chairman of the LDP, when it lost government participation for the first time in almost fifty years. Through a coalition agreement with the Socialist Party of Japan , according to which this was allowed to provide the prime minister, Kōno brought the LDP back into government in 1994. From 1998 to 2003 Kōno led its own faction, the Kōno faction (officially: Taiyūkai ). Since his election as Shūgiin president in 2003, he has not formally belonged to any parliamentary group or faction. Kono withdrew from politics after the 2009 election . He was the longest term Shūgiin president since Parliament was established in 1890.
From 1999 to 2013 he was also President of the Japanese Athletics Federation (Rikuren).
family
His father was the former minister, co-founder of the LDP and Rikuren-President Kōno Ichirō . His eldest son Tarō is a member of the Shūgiin (LDP, Asō faction ). Kōnos uncle Kenzō was a member of parliament and president of the Sangiin , the upper house, and also president of the Rikuren.
Kōnos maternal grandfather was the Kenseikai MP Tagawa Heisaburō ( 田川平 三郎 ), whose grandson Seiichi was also MP, Minister of the Interior and from 1980 to 1984 chairman of the New Liberal Club.
