Terauchi Masatake ( Japanese 寺内 正毅 ; born February 5, 1852 in the fiefdom of Chōshū (today: Yamaguchi Prefecture ); † November 3, 1919 ) was a Japanese soldier and politician and the 18th Prime Minister of Japan from October 9, 1916 to September 29 , 1919 . September 1918 .

Life

As a young samurai, he fought against the Bakufu in the Boshin War in 1868 . After he was sent to France for military training , he held various important military posts in the Japanese army and was appointed Minister of the Army in 1901 . In this office he helped to win the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905).

In May 1910 Terauchi became the third and last General Resident of Korea and with the annexation of Korea as a Japanese province on August 22, 1910, he became the first Governor General of Chosen Province.

During the First World War he was appointed Field Marshal General ( Gensui ) on June 16, 1916 , and Prime Minister of Japan in October. He declared that he wanted to intervene in the Russian Revolution by sending Japanese troops to Siberia ( Siberian intervention ). In 1918, however, he resigned from his post because of the nationwide rice unrest .

His son Terauchi Hisaichi was also appointed Gensui , but in the Pacific War .
