Ijūin Gorō ( Japanese 伊 集 院 五郎 ; born November 9, 1852 in Satsuma Province ; died January 13, 1921 ) was a Japanese naval officer during the Meiji and Taishō periods .

life and work

As a teenager, Ijūin Goro took part in the wars of liberation against the shogunate. After the Meiji Restoration , he entered the Naval Academy. In 1878 he was sent to England for further training and served there from 1879 to 1882 on the HMS Triumph, which was commissioned in 1870 . Back in Japan he became a lieutenant at sea on the Naniwa ( 浪 速 ) in 1886 and joined the naval staff from 1892 to 1895. As a sea captain, he proved himself in 1895 in the Battle of the Yellow Sea on the Saikyō-maru ( 西京 丸 ) and was awarded the " Order of the Golden Consecration , 4th Class". In 1898 he became rear admiral, in 1900 he developed the "Ijūin fuse" and was awarded the " Order of the Rising Sun , 3rd Class". For his excellent performance during the Boxer Rebellion , he received the "Order of the Rising Sun, 2nd Class". In 1903 he became Vice Admiral, then Deputy Chief of Naval Staff. Finally, he was awarded the Grand Cross of the "Order of the Rising Sun" (1st class) for his achievements in the Russo-Japanese War .

Ijūin Gorō was buried in the Aoyama Cemetery .

Remarks

  1. The Ijūin fuse ( 伊 集 院 信 管 Ijūin shinkan ), an improved fuse for artillery projectiles, was widely used in the Russo-Japanese War.
