Margrave Nozu Michitsura ( Japanese 野 津 道 貫 ; * December 17, 1840 in Kagoshima ; † October 18, 1908 ) was a Japanese General Field Marshal ( Gensui ).

Life

He was born the son of a samurai of the Satsuma feud . In 1871 he was promoted to major in the Imperial Japanese Army . He then served as chief of staff in the 2nd Brigade during the Satsuma rebellion . In 1878 he became commander in chief of the Tokyo military district . In 1884 he was sent on a trip to Europe to study the military systems of the major European powers. After returning to Japan, he took over the 5th Division in the Hiroshima Military District. During the First Sino-Japanese War , he was in command of the 1st Army and was promoted to general. His later posts were Commander of the Imperial Guard , Inspector General and Military Adviser. During the Russo-Japanese War he commanded the 4th Army . In the Battle of Hsimucheng he defeated the Imperial Russian Army and took part in the Battle of Mukden .

After the war, Nozu was promoted to field marshal in 1906 and appointed koshaku (margrave) in 1907 according to the Japanese nobility system of the kazoku , which gave him a seat in the Kizokuin , the Japanese upper house, from September .
