In winter Steele started at the Four Hills Tournament 1972/73 , but did not get above rank 80 in the overall standings. It was not until the following Four Hills Tournament in 1973/74 that he made his breakthrough. Although he started cautiously in Oberstdorf and Garmisch-Partenkirchen , he was 23rd in Innsbruck on the Bergiselschanze for the first time in the top 30th. After a 27th place in Bischofshofen , he finished the tour in 33rd place overall. He was unable to build on this result until 1977.

At the US championships in 1974 in his hometown Leavenworth , he won the title in individual jumping. He then traveled as a member of the national team to the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1974 in Falun . From the large hill he was able to place himself in 40th place with jumps of 84 and 79.5 meters. From the normal hill he reached the 46th place after jumps on 76 and 74 meters. In the same year he won the ski flying title on Copper Peak in Ironwood .

After he had no further international successes, he ended his active ski jumping career in 1977. After the end of his career, Steele, who previously worked in a ski shop, moved to ski manufacturer Rossignol as an Alpine Technical Representative . A little later he was promoted to Vice President of Marketing and Sales. In 2012 he took over the position of Managing Director of Group Rossignol North America .
