Leavenworth is a city in Chelan County in the US state of Washington with 2074 inhabitants (2000). It is located in the mountains of the Cascade Range on US Highway 2 . Leavenworth lives almost exclusively from tourism today . Almost two million tourists visit the place every year.

history

Until the first half of the 20th century, Leavenworth had an important freight loading station as the largest economic factor in the community. When the economy collapsed after its closure in the course of relocating the railway lines, Leavenworth threatened to become a ghost town . In the 1960s, the remaining inhabitants turned the city into a "typical" mountain resort in the Alps with great commitment - and without any historical reasons . The illusion of a Bavarian mountain village is reinforced by the surrounding mountains.

tourism

Numerous festivals and activities are held throughout the year, which are based on the typical festivities in places in Bavaria and the Alpine region . There is a May festival , an Oktoberfest, a Christmas market and an international accordion competition . The Nutcracker Museum is also very well known, with more than 5000 exhibits.

Leavenworth is a hub of all kinds of outdoor activities, from hiking, horseback riding to kayaking . It is the Mecca of the American sport climbing scene. About five kilometers west of US Highway 2, which leads to Stevens Pass , lies Castle Rock with several popular climbing routes of up to three pitches, which has played an important role in the development of American climbing since 1948. From Tumwater Mountain above you can see the Drury Falls, a waterfall that plunges a thousand meters into Tumwater Canyon. Other climbing areas in the immediate area include Snow Creek Wall, the spectacular granite tower of Midnight Rock, Pearly Gates and Icicle Creek Buttress.

In winter Leavenworth has 26 kilometers of cross-country ski runs and 35 miles (56 kilometers) west of the snowy Stevens Pass, a piste area with a total of nine lifts for snowboarders and alpine skiing . The winter season lasts about three months.
