May Festival

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A May Festival is a festive custom that takes place regularly in May and has taken on very different forms in different societies over the course of cultural history . It usually takes place on May 1st or the first weekend in May. In many regions it is associated with the erection of a maypole . In the former fishing village of Cologne-Poll , the May Festival is also linked to the - earlier - catching of allis shad .

In Rhineland May customs, the May Festival - often as a fair - is usually organized by May clubs, bachelor groups ( Geloog , Reih, bachelor club ) or traditional groups. In addition to the events in public space, the actual celebrations usually take place in a marquee or large hall. The focus is often a couple of May Kings or a May Queen alone . The customs, selection and proclamation procedures vary from place to place. The new royal couple is sometimes proclaimed on May 1st, sometimes later at a royal ball.

In Cologne, only the title of "Meygraf" can be found in medieval mentions. Later, however, the May Queen was in the foreground and the title of May Graf disappeared.

Closely related to the May Festival is - by region - often a certain beverage, earlier than Maitrank referred. The best known is the Maibowle , a mix of wine and sparkling wine; in East Prussia there was a variant with dark beer and schnapps. Maibock is a special type of beer that is brewed in May, but is not directly related to May festivals, but is also popular there.
