The word “Kirmes” goes back to the Middle High German “Kirmesse”, which originated from “Kirchmesse”. This word referred to the service or the Holy Mass for the dedication of a church, which turns a building into a holy place. Thus, the "Kirmes" is the annual commemoration of the day of the church consecration, see also Kirchweih .
