course

At around 460 m above sea level, it was fed by several smaller seepage streams and a spring in the Freiberg city forest near Freibergsdorf , north and south of today's federal highway 173 . The water from this large, very flat plateau was later fed to the Freiberg water supply via an artificial ditch in the 16th century . Therefore, the Schirmbach rises today from a tributary about 1.5 kilometers northwest of the original source, at 450 m above sea level. NN. It first flows through Kleinschirma until it flows into the Große Striegis in Wegefarth , 338 m above sea level. It overcomes an average gradient of four percent. Its catchment area has a size of approx. 950 ha, with a little over 15 percent being forested. Along the creek, especially between Kleinschirma and Wegefarth, there is a gallery-like remnant of the original, creek-accompanying alder creek forest, which is partly replaced by willow bushes and polluted willows in the town. According to legend, the headless horseman, Baron Philipp von Wegefarth, is said to haunt at night, especially along the Schirmbach.
