former Satsuma Province (now part of Kagoshima Prefecture )

Satsuma ( Japanese 薩摩 国 , Satsuma no kuni ) or Sasshū ( 薩 州 ) was one of the historical provinces of Japan and was in the area of today's Kagoshima Prefecture on Kyūshū .

history

In 702 a Hayato uprising took place in the region and the Shoku Nihongi Chronicle writes about it:

「八月 丙申 、 朔。 薩摩 ・ 多 褹。 隔 化 逆命。 於是 発 兵 兵 征討。 遂 校 戸 置 吏 焉。」

"8th. Month, 1st day: Satsuma and Tane broke their relationship and disobeyed the king's orders. So (the government) sent out an army, captured it, counted the population and appointed officials. "

Satsuma was then split off from Hyūga Province and appointed a governor to defend this border region ( 唱 更 国 司 ).

The Hayato lived in 11 of 13 districts ( kōri / gun ) and only in the districts of Izumi ( 出水 郡 ) and Taki ( 高 城 郡 ) north of the Sendai-gawa river were citizens from other provinces settled. This can also be seen from the fact that the villages of Kōshi ( 合 志 ), Akita ( 飽 多 ), Uto ( 宇 土 ) and Takuma ( 託 萬 ) in the district of Taki, names of districts in the northern province of Higo . The provincial capital ( kokufu ) was also in the Taki district near today's Satsumasendai .

The province was ruled from 1197 on by the Shimazu as Shugo or later daimyō , from 1602 as part of the Satsuma fief , which also included the adjacent province of Ōsumi .

In 1871 the province was in the abolition of the feudal system and the establishment of the prefectures of Kagoshima prefecture on.

Others

The province of Satsuma also gave its name to the Satsuma mandarins , as the first mandarin trees were exported to the USA from there in the mid-19th century .
