Kaga ( Japanese 加 賀国 , Kaga no kuni ) or Kashū ( 加州 ) was one of the historical provinces of Japan on the southern part of what is now Ishikawa Prefecture . Kaga bordered the provinces of Echizen , Etchu , Hida and Noto and belonged to the Hokurikudō region .

The province emerged in 823 as a spin-off from Echizen. The old provincial capital ( kokufu ) was today's district of Kofu-machi (Kofu means "old capital") of Komatsu .

During the Edo period , the province consisted of the Han Kaga , Daishōji (branched off from Kaga) and Daishōji-Shinden (branched off from Daishōji), all of whom were ruled by the Maeda family. Their seat was Kanazawa .
