Chikugo Province, now part of Fukuoka Prefecture

Chikugo ( Japanese 筑 後 国 , Chikugo no kuni ) was one of the historical provinces of Japan in the area of the southern part of today's Fukuoka Prefecture on the island of Kyūshū . Chikugo bordered the provinces of Hizen , Chikuzen , Bungo, and Higo .

The province emerged at the end of the 7th century when the old Tsukushi ( 筑紫 国 ) province was split up into the provinces of Chikuzen ("front Tsukushi") and Chikugo ("rear Tsukushi"). These were also collectively referred to as Chikushū ( 筑 州 , "Tsukushi Province (s)").

The old capital of the province ( kokufu ) was near the modern city of Kurume . In the Edo period the province was divided into two fiefs . The Tachibana clan received the western part with Yanagawa as capital and the Arima received the east with Kurume.
