Suruga ( Japanese. 駿 河 国 , Suruga no kuni ) or Sunshū ( 駿 州 ) was one of the historical provinces of Japan in the area of today's eastern Shizuoka Prefecture . Suruga bordered the provinces of Izu , Kai , Sagami , Shinano and Tōtōmi .

The old capital ( Kokufu ) was Sumpu ( 駿府 today: Shizuoka ), a short form of Suruga Fuchū ( 駿 , dt "capital of Suruga."), Which remained the most important city in the feudal era. The province was ruled by the Imagawa family for most of the Sengoku period .

After Imagawa Yoshimoto was defeated by Oda Nobunaga , the Imagawa were ousted and the province was taken by Takeda Shingen . It was later given to one of his allies by Tokugawa Ieyasu .

In 1991 the asteroid (4383) Suruga was named after the historical province.
