Shizuoka ( Japanese 静岡 市 , -shi ) is a city and the administrative seat of the Shizuoka prefecture of the same name on the southeast coast of Honshū , the main island of Japan . The region is at great risk from earthquakes .

The Shizuoka University was founded in the 1949th Shizuoka is the center of the Japanese tea trade, tea and oranges are grown in the area. The manufacture of lacquer, bamboo and basketry, as well as mechanical engineering, are also economically significant .

history

People settled here as early as 200 to 300 AD, and later a trade route ran here. The city was originally called Sumpu ( 駿府 ), a short form of Suruga Fuchū ( 駿 dt. "Capital of Suruga"). Tokugawa Ieyasu , one of the three unifiers and founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate , had his retirement home here.

Since Fuchū can also mean treason ( 不忠 ), it was decided in 1869 to rename the city. The new name should be Shizuhata ( 賤 機 山 / 賎 機 山 ) Shizugaoka ( 賎 ヶ 丘 ) after the mountain or hill ( oka ) near Sumpu Castle . However, since the Kanji is “poor; means greedy ”, it was replaced by the homophonic meaning“ calm, peaceful ”; In addition, the archaic particle ga was ultimately left out.

On April 1, 1889, he was appointed Shi (independent city).

During the Second World War , the city was bombed several times by the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) between March 1945 and June 1945 . The attack with the most serious consequences was an area bombing with napalm bombs on June 19, 1945. The attacks destroyed around 66% of the city area and claimed 1,950 deaths.
