Fukuroi ( Japanese 袋井市 , -shi ) is a city in Shizuoka Prefecture in Japan .

Fukuroi is located southwest of Shizuoka and east of Hamamatsu on the Pacific Ocean .

Fukuroi was a post office ( 宿場町 Shukuba-machi ) of the Tōkaidō during the Edo period .

Fukuroi is on National Road 1 from Tokyo to Kyoto , which partly follows the historic Tōkaidō Street.

The Fukuroi station on the Tōkaidō Main Line is of trains of the railway company JR Central operates. From 1902 to 1962 the Fukuroi tram (also known as the Akiba line) operated. The Sun'en Line , which existed from 1913 to 1970, was an overland tram that connected Fukuroi with Omaezaki and Fujieda .
