Hans Langendörfer

Hans Langendörfer SJ (born November 25, 1951 in Bonn ) is a German Jesuit and secretary of the German Bishops' Conference .

Life

Hans Langendörfer was born in 1951 as the son of the medical doctor Günter Langendörfer in Bonn, his grandfather was the Bonn City Director Johannes Langendörfer. After graduating from Beethoven-Gymnasium Bonn , he entered the Jesuit order in 1972 and was ordained a priest in 1979 after studying philosophy , politics and theology in Munich and Frankfurt am Main . From 1981 to 1986 he was a research assistant in the project "Ethical Problems of Security Policy" at the University of Bonn and received his doctorate in moral theology with the dissertation Atomic Deterrence and Church Ethics of Peace , supervised by Franz Böckle . From 1987 to 1989 he was a research assistant in the Federal Chancellery and then became head of the "Jesuit Foyer" in Bonn.

On February 27, 1996, he was elected to succeed Prelate Wilhelm Schätzler as the fourth secretary of the German Bishops' Conference and took up this office on July 1 of the same year. Since then he has been confirmed in this office several times.

On February 25, 2020, Hans Langendörfer announced in an interview that he would not be available for re-election as secretary of the Bishops 'Conference at the spring plenary meeting of the Bishops' Conference in March 2020 after more than 20 years in office. At the spring general assembly, however, it was announced that Langendörfer would remain in office for a few months, at the latest until the end of 2020.
