Franz Böckle

Franz Böckle (born April 18, 1921 in Glarus , Switzerland ; † July 8, 1991 there ) was a Roman Catholic moral theologian .

Life

Böckle grew up with three siblings in a religious home in Glarus. After graduating from high school in 1941, he studied theology at the St. Luzi seminary (today: Chur Theological University ). In 1944 he was with the work "The idea of fertility in the letters of Paul" Dr. theol. PhD . The war ended in 1945 he received by Bishop Christian Caminada in Chur , the ordination . He was first vicar in Zurich . There he met the Catholic systematist Hans Urs von Balthasar , with whom he exchanged ideas about the modern Protestant theology of Karl Barth . Böckle deepened his examination of Protestant theology in an ecumenical working group together with Fritz Blanke and Otto Karrer . The publication Law and Conscience with four essays on the so-called controversial theology comes from this time . From 1950 to 1952 he completed postgraduate studies in Rome and was also active in hospital pastoral care.

In 1952 he became professor of moral theology at the St. Luzi seminary (today: Chur Theological University ). After a period of preparation at the Munich moral theological seminar with Richard Egenter , he began teaching in 1953; his successor was Alojzij Šuštar in 1963 .

In 1963, Böckle was appointed to the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn as the successor to the moral theologian Werner Schöllgen . From 1983 to 1985 he held the post of rector at this university .

In 1991 he received an honorary doctorate from the Medical Faculty in Bonn.

In July 1991, Böckle died of cancer in his birthplace, Glarus.

Act

With one of his teachers in Chur, the dogmatist Johannes Feiner , he published the well-known volume, Issues of Theology Today , in 1957 . In 1968 he published the work Freedom and Tolerance together with Georg Leber, and in 1989 together with Johannes Rau Social Democracy and Churches .

Böckle was considered an expert on Karl Barth's Protestant ethics. He has published numerous works and writings on moral theology and ecumenism. The best known work is Fundamental Morality . Together with Franz-Xaver Kaufmann , Karl Rahner and Bernhard Welte , he was the editor of the 30-volume series Christian Faith in Modern Society .

One of his students is Karl-Wilhelm Merks .
