Franz-Xaver Kaufmann (born August 22, 1932 in Zurich ) is a Swiss sociologist who has lived in Germany since 1963 .

Life

Franz-Xaver Kaufmann grew up as the fifth child in a convinced Catholic family in a town shaped by the Reformed Church . Following the family tradition - his father was a lawyer - he studied law at the University of Zurich and economics at the University of St. Gallen . In 1957/58 he studied sociology with Raymond Aron and Georges Gurvitch in Paris. In 1960 he did his doctorate with the economists Walter Adolf Jöhr and Emil Küng in St. Gallen. After practical work in the personnel department of a Swiss chemical company, he worked at the social research center at the University of Münster in Dortmund under Helmut Schelsky and at the same time completed his habilitation at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster (1968). He was one of the co-founders of the Faculty of Sociology at Bielefeld University and worked there from 1969 until his retirement (1997) as Professor of Social Policy and Sociology. From 1979 to 1983 he was director at the Center for Interdisciplinary Research at Bielefeld University, from 1980 to 1992 at the Institute for Population Research and Social Policy he founded there.

Franz-Xaver Kaufmann has been a full member of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts since 1998 . Since 2013 he has been spokesman for the Senate of the Schader Foundation .

His main areas of work include the history and theory of social policy, as well as family and religious sociology . His sociology of social policy is oriented towards control theory and impact analysis. Contributions to the theory of the welfare state emphasize its normative foundations and socio-theoretical implications. He emphasizes the importance of the family for social welfare production and through his participation in the 5th Family Report of the Federal Government (1994) has brought this perspective into the political debates. His contributions to the sociology of religion relate primarily to a sociology of Catholicism, to which he is linked through numerous advisory activities.

Awards

Franz-Xaver Kaufmann was chairman of the Scientific Council of the Catholic Academy in Berlin for many years . In March 2007, Georg Cardinal Sterzinsky awarded him the highest honor of the Archdiocese of Berlin , the "Silver Hedwig Medal ", for his many years of voluntary work. Also in 2007 he was awarded the Schader Prize for his services in the dialogue between social sciences and practice. In 2009, Bielefeld University appointed Kaufmann an honorary senator for his services to the university. In June 2012 he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the Catholic Faculty of the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster. At the beginning of October 2012, Kaufmann received an award from the German Sociological Society for his outstanding scientific life's work . In the same year he also received the Heinrich Brauns Prize .
