Alojzij Šuštar (in German-speaking countries also Alois Sustar ; born November 14, 1920 in Grmada , Občina Trebnje , Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes ; † June 29, 2007 in Ljubljana ) was Archbishop of Ljubljana from 1980 to 1997 .

Life

Alojzij Šuštar was ordained a priest in Rome in 1946 . After completing his studies, he received his doctorate in Rome in 1949 . Due to his poor health, a return to his Slovenian-Yugoslav homeland was initially not possible; since the late 1940s he spent a longer stay in Davos . Later he worked as a pastor in the diocese of Chur ; In 1949 he became bishop of Christian Caminada as vicar in St. Moritz used. From 1951, Šuštar was a teacher of philosophy and religion at the College of Maria Hilf in Schwyz , from 1959 to 1963 also as their spiritual director .

In 1963 he succeeded Franz Böckle as professor of moral theology at the St. Luzi Seminary (today: Theological University of Chur ), where he was also Regens from 1965 to 1968 . In 1968 he was appointed Episcopal Vicar of the Diocese of Chur.

He was also on the presidium of Synod 72 Chur (president of the presidium) and Switzerland, press officer of the Swiss Bishops 'Conference (1967–1975), secretary of the Council of European Bishops' Conferences (CCEE) and as a member of many ecumenical bodies and the Theological Commission of the Swiss Bishops' Conference (President) engaged. From 1977 Alojzij Šuštar was again active in his home diocese of Ljubljana. In 1980 he was appointed Archbishop of the Metropolitan Seat of Ljubljana. He received his episcopal ordination on April 13, 1980, the Apostolic Pronuntius of Yugoslavia, Michele Cecchini .

In 1997, Pope John Paul II accepted Šuštar's resignation, which had been submitted in 1995. Alojzij Šuštar died in Ljubljana at the end of June 2007.
