Alojz Uran (born January 22, 1945 in Ljubljana ; † April 11, 2020 there ) was a Slovenian Roman Catholic clergyman and Archbishop of Ljubljana .

Life

Alojz Uran was born in 1945 as the third child of a rural family. After graduation in 1964 he studied at the Theological Faculty of the University of Ljubljana theology and received on 29 June 1970 by Archbishop Jožef Pogačnik the sacrament of Holy Orders . He worked as a chaplain in Ljubljana. From 1973 to 1977 he studied in Rome, where he completed a catechetical-pedagogical specialization at the Catechetical Institute of the Pedagogical Faculty of the Pontifical University of the Salesians , and completed his master's degree in catechesis for adults in 1977. After his return to Ljubljana, he became rector of the boys' seminary in St. Peter in Ljubljana that same year . In 1980, he became the pastor of Ljubljana Great parish named St. Veit.

On 16 December 1992 it appointed Pope John Paul II. To the titular of Abula and auxiliary bishop in Ljubljana. The Pope himself donated him episcopal ordination on January 6, 1993 in St. Peter's Basilica . Co- consecrators were the Archbishops of the Curia Giovanni Battista Re , Official in the State Secretariat , and Justin Francis Rigali , Secretary of the Congregation for Bishops . His episcopal motto was "Yes, Father."

On December 31, 1992 he was appointed canon and dean of the cathedral chapter and archdeacon. He was a member of the Catechetical Council of the Diocese and the Interdiocese Council, member and head of the Commission for Spiritual Professions and lecturer at the Faculty of Theology and Pastoral Affairs, which works at the Theological Faculty in Ljubljana, Novo mesto , Koper and Nova Gorica . He was also the chairman of the Diocesan Committee for the Spiritual Professions and in charge of the Slovene Bishops' Conference for the Spiritual Professions. In 1996 he prepared and coordinated the Pope's first visit to Slovenia. From 2000 to 2006 he was delegate of the Slovenian Bishops' Conference for the pastoral care of Slovenes worldwide.

On October 25, 2004, John Paul II appointed him to succeed Franc Rodé as Archbishop of Ljubljana. Alojz Uran was the 34th bishop of the Archdiocese of Ljubljana and the fifth Metropolitan of Ljubljana . In 2004 he was elected vice chairman and in 2007 chairman of the Slovenian Bishops' Conference. As Archbishop of Ljubljana, he was Grand Chancellor of the Faculty of Theology at the University of Ljubljana. In 2005 she was accepted into the European Academy of Sciences and Arts .

On November 28, 2009, Pope Benedict XVI. his resignation request submitted for health reasons. He died in April 2020 of health problems following two heart operations.
