Anton Stres CM (born December 15, 1942 in Donačka Gora ) is a Slovenian religious and emeritus Roman Catholic Archbishop of Ljubljana .

Life

Anton Stres joined the religious order of the Lazarists , made his profession on March 28, 1967 and was ordained a priest on April 20, 1968 .

Pope John Paul II appointed him auxiliary bishop in Maribor and titular bishop of Poetovium on May 13, 2000 . The bishop of Maribor, Franc Kramberger , donated him the episcopal ordination on June 24th of the same year; Co- consecrators were Franc Rodé CM, Archbishop of Ljubljana, and Metod Pirih , Bishop of Koper . As a motto he chose Omnia propter Gospel .

On April 7, 2006 he was appointed Bishop of Celje and on May 21 of the same year he was appointed to the office. Benedict XVI. appointed him on January 31, 2009 Coadjutor Archbishop of Maribor. He was appointed Archbishop of Ljubljana on November 28, 2009 and was introduced to the office on January 24 of the following year.

On July 31, 2013, Pope Francis accepted his resignation, which he had offered because of the dire financial situation of the Archdiocese of Maribor . This and the simultaneous resignation of the Archbishop of Maribor, Marjan Turnšek , should enable a new beginning for the Church in Slovenia.

Pope Francis appointed him Consultor of the Pontifical Council for Culture on May 3, 2018 .

Academic career

Stres taught at the University of Ljubljana from 1974 . In 1977 he became assistant professor and 1985 adjunct professor. In 1990 he received a full professorship. From 1983 to 1993 he was head of the Department of Philosophy, and from 1999 to 2000 dean of the faculty. During his academic career he wrote 18 books and over 300 scientific papers.
